Pumpkin colors and flavors at the transhumance festival in the Primiero Valley
The Gran Festa del Desmontegar is one of the most cherished autumn events in eastern Trentino. Every late September, it celebrates the desmontegar—the return of livestock from summer mountain pastures to the valley floor—an ancient rite that still defines life for the communities of the Primiero Valley in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The festival spans all the villages in the valley—Fiera di Primiero, Tonadico, Siror, Transacqua, Mezzano, and Imer—with a four-day program blending farming traditions, mountain gastronomy, and folklore.
As part of the event, the Municipality of Imer hosts the "Pumpkin Colors and Flavors" gathering, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Ex Sièghe area. It is a day designed primarily for families, dedicated to the pumpkin and the flavors of the Primiero autumn.
The Imer event is part of a mosaic of happenings animating the entire Primiero Valley: the livestock exhibition in Fiera di Primiero, the "Dì del Formai" at Palazzo Scopoli in Tonadico, the "Boskavai" in Imer, farm experiences, and the Beer Festival in Transacqua. The grand finale is Sunday's Desmontegada, a parade of festively decorated herds moving through the villages, complete with traditional costumes, folk groups, and marching bands.
More than just a festival, the Desmontegar is a celebration of Primiero's identity: it tells the story of the deep bond between the community, its farmers, and the surrounding Dolomites. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to discover mountain-hut cheeses, pastoral culture, and the authentic atmosphere of Trentino villages in the heart of autumn colors.
The 2026 edition of the Gran Festa del Desmontegar, the 26th, is scheduled from Thursday, September 24 to Sunday, September 27, 2026, in the villages of the Primiero Valley.
In Imer, on Saturday, September 26 from the afternoon, the Ex Sièghe area hosts "Pumpkin Colors and Flavors": pumpkin carving workshops for children with a snack, a farmers' market, goat milking and ricotta preparation, evening lantern-lit walks, and a reservation-only dinner featuring pumpkin-based dishes and Primiero cheeses.
The event program also includes the livestock exhibition in Fiera di Primiero (Thursday), the "Dì del Formai" in Tonadico and the "Boskavai" in Imer (Friday), farm experiences and the Beer Festival in Transacqua (Saturday), and the great final Desmontegada on Sunday, September 27.
Imer is located in the Primiero Valley, in the province of Trento. By car: Take the SS50 Passo Rolle road from Trento or Feltre. By train: Take the train to Feltre station (Padova–Belluno line) and then the Trentino Trasporti bus to Primiero.
The "Pumpkin Colors and Flavors" event is held in the Ex Sièghe area of Imer. Many activities require reservations and have limited capacity: we recommend booking in advance with the ApT San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero e Vanoi tourist office (tel. +39 0439 62407).
