The transhumance festival among the artistic woodpiles of Mezzano, in the Primiero Valley
The Gran Festa del Desmontegar is one of the most cherished autumn events in eastern Trentino. Every late September, it celebrates the desmontegar, the return of livestock from summer mountain pastures to the valley floor: an ancient ritual that still defines the life of the Primiero Valley communities in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The festival spreads across all the villages in the valley — Fiera di Primiero, Tonadico, Siror, Transacqua, Imer, and Mezzano — with a four-day program blending farming tradition, mountain gastronomy, and folklore.
The Municipality of Mezzano, a member of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy circuit, offers one of the most picturesque settings for the event. The heart of the festivities is Piazza Brolo, where the food stand serves traditional Primiero dishes, and from where guided tours depart for the historic center and the permanent Cataste&Canzei exhibition, a famous artistic trail that transforms traditional firewood stacks in the alleys into genuine works of art.
The Mezzano event is part of a mosaic of happenings animating the entire Primiero Valley: the Cattle Show in Fiera di Primiero, the "Dì del Formai" (Cheese Day) at Palazzo Scopoli in Tonadico, the "Boskavai" in Imer, the "En dì al Maso" (A Day at the Farm) experiences in Siror, "Benvenuti in Fattoria" (Welcome to the Farm) in Val Canali, and the Beer Festival in Transacqua. The grand finale is the Desmontegada on Sunday, a parade of herds decorated for the occasion, winding through the villages accompanied by traditional costumes, folk groups, and marching bands.
More than just a festival, the Desmontegar is a celebration of Primiero's identity: it tells the story of the deep bond between the community, its farmers, and the surrounding Dolomites. In Mezzano, this narrative intertwines with the folk art of the woodpiles, making the village an open-air museum. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to discover mountain cheeses, craft beer, pastoral culture, and the authentic atmosphere of Trentino villages in the heart of autumn colors.
The 2026 edition of the Gran Festa del Desmontegar, the 26th, is scheduled from Thursday, September 24 to Sunday, September 27, 2026, in the villages of the Primiero Valley.
In Mezzano, activities are concentrated in Piazza Brolo, with a food stand serving traditional dishes and guided tours of the historic center and the permanent Cataste&Canzei exhibition. The Bionoc' craft brewery opens its doors for tours and tastings by reservation ("Discovering the Bionoc' World"), distributed over the four days: Thursday and Friday at 5:15 PM, Saturday at 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM, and Sunday at 4:30 PM.
The festival program also includes the Cattle Show in Fiera di Primiero (Thursday), the "Dì del Formai" in Tonadico and the "Boskavai" in Imer (Friday), the "En dì al Maso" experiences in Siror, "Benvenuti in Fattoria" in Val Canali, and the Beer Festival in Transacqua (Saturday), followed by the grand closing Desmontegada on Sunday, September 27.
Mezzano is located in the Primiero Valley, in the province of Trento. By car: SS50 Passo Rolle road from Trento or Feltre. By train: Feltre station (Padua–Belluno line) followed by a Trentino Trasporti bus to Primiero.
The Mezzano events take place in Piazza Brolo and the historic center. Tours and tastings at the Bionoc' brewery require reservations: we recommend booking in advance at the ApT San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero and Vanoi office (tel. +39 0439 62407, [email protected]).
