A gastronomic tour through the hamlets of the Vanoi Valley

Intorno par i Colmei de Ronc is the traditional gastronomic tour that brings the village of Ronco to life every summer. Located in the municipality of Canal San Bovo, in the heart of the Vanoi Valley in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), the event is organized by the Pro Loco Ronco. It features a 5 km walk through the small settlements scattered across the steep mountain slopes, known locally as "colmei."

What are the colmei?

The colmei (or "colmèi") are small residential clusters, sometimes consisting of just a few houses, that together make up the village of Ronco. Until the early 19th century, the area was marked on maps with the plural name "Ronchi"; only with population growth did these numerous colmèi form the current village. Essential elements of every colmel include the house—traditionally paired with a stable and barn—a fountain, and a religious symbol, such as a chapel or a fresco. Among the most well-known clusters are Ronco Chiesa, the main center, Ronco Cainari, and Ronco Costa.

How the day unfolds

The meeting point is at the Ronco Chiesa Festival Area, generally at 9:30 AM. From there, divided into groups and accompanied by a guide, participants follow roads and paths connecting the various colmei. At each stop, there is a tasting of typical products and drinks: an aperitif, appetizer, lunch, dessert, and herbal teas are served along the route. The return is expected around 4:30 PM. Each edition revolves around a theme that highlights the valley's rural culture: in recent seasons, the common thread has been "Stories along a thread: linen processing," featuring anecdotes and demonstrations on the ancient use of linen in the Vanoi.

The event is much more than a simple food and wine walk: it is an opportunity to rediscover the roots of a mountain community, amidst mountain huts, ancient crafts, and memories linked to the Vanoi Ecomuseum. Walking through the colmei, one understands the unique character of this corner of Trentino, where hospitality and genuine flavors tell an ancient story.
