An ancient village festival in Mezzano dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, featuring a procession, a bocce tournament, and the Palio dei Musati.
The Sagra dei Carmeni and Festa del Carmenin is one of the most beloved traditional events in Primiero. Every July, it brings the streets and squares of Mezzano to life—a Trentino village recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, located in the province of Trento in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The festival originates from the devotion to the Madonna del Carmine and has always combined the sacred moment of worship with the secular joy of community gatherings, gastronomy, and games.
The religious heart of the festival is Sunday, when the village gathers around the figure of the Madonna del Carmine. A solemn Holy Mass is celebrated in the morning, while in the afternoon, around 5:00 PM, the procession winds through the town center: the statue of the Virgin is carried on the shoulders of eighteen-year-old conscripts in light blue tunics, a custom passed down from generation to generation that involves the entire community.
On Monday, with the Festa del Carmenin, tradition turns into play. From the early hours of the morning, starting at 8:00 AM, the historic bocce tournament takes place, featuring a challenge between the two districts of the village, Grisoni and Pranovi: a popular competition that winds through the village alleys and is rooted in nearly a century of history, involving both young and old in a contest that is as playful as it is heartfelt.
The most anticipated and characteristic event is the Palio dei Musati: eight donkeys, guided by as many jockeys, compete in a race through the streets of the center, representing the municipalities of Primiero. It is a one-of-a-kind event that mixes folklore, irony, and a sense of belonging, attracting numerous spectators, both residents and tourists, every year.
Alongside the traditional moments, the festival offers a rich calendar of events. Evenings begin in Piazza Brolo with concerts and shows, ranging from the lyrical Gala of the Trentino Music Festival to tribute concerts. On Sunday, the village hosts a large traditional market with dozens of stalls and street entertainment. There is no shortage of food stands, where you can taste typical mountain dishes from the Primiero cuisine, such as tripe served by the Alpini and other local specialties, all accompanied by music and entertainment for both adults and children.
The setting for the festival is Mezzano, a small jewel nestled in the Primiero Valley, also famous for the artistic initiative Cataste & Canzei, an open-air museum of woodpiles decorated by Trentino artists. Experiencing the Sagra dei Carmeni means discovering an authentic village where tradition, art, and mountain hospitality blend into a genuine community experience.
The 28th edition of the Sagra dei Carmeni and Festa del Carmenin takes place in Mezzano di Primiero from Saturday, July 18 to Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The evenings in Piazza Brolo open the festival with the Trentino Music Festival Gala and a tribute concert (9:00 PM). Sunday is dedicated to the Sagra dei Carmeni: a traditional market with dozens of stalls, a solemn Holy Mass in the morning, and the Madonna del Carmine procession in the afternoon, with food stands available. On Monday, for the Festa del Carmenin, the historic bocce tournament between the Grisoni and Pranovi districts takes place (from 8:00 AM), followed by children's games with donkeys and, in the evening, the Palio dei Musati, the donkey race representing the municipalities of Primiero.
Mezzano is located in the Primiero Valley, in the province of Trento. By car: from the A22 Brenner motorway, take the Ora or San Michele-Mezzocorona exit, then follow the SS47 Valsugana road and the SS50 towards Primiero. The nearest train station is Feltre (Belluno), which is connected to the Primiero Valley by bus.
The Primiero Valley and the nearby San Martino di Castrozza offer numerous accommodation facilities, from hotels to apartments and farm stays (agriturismi).
