The patronal feast of Ronco in the Vanoi Valley
The Brugne Festival is the patronal feast of the small village of Ronco, in the municipality of Canal San Bovo, the heart of the Vanoi Valley in Trentino-Alto Adige. The event takes place in early September, coinciding with the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the community's patron saint. It is a time when the residents of Ronco come together to thank their protector at the end of summer and renew the bonds that have united the village families for generations.
The festival's name comes from brugne, the local dialect word for the plums that ripen at this time of year on the valley slopes. A simple, iconic fruit of the area, the 'brugna' is the star of the traditional tombola delle brugne, one of the most anticipated and characteristic moments of the day, which gives the festival its unique and genuine character.
The festival takes place over a single Sunday. The morning begins with Holy Mass in the parish church of Ronco, followed by a community lunch open to everyone, based on voluntary donations. In the afternoon, the community gathers for the procession with the Blessed Virgin Mary through the village streets, followed by games, the raffle, and a social snack.
The festival is organized by Pro Loco Ronco, established in 1993 through the merger of various local committees and spontaneous groups. The association, which represents the community and manages its cultural and recreational life, organizes numerous events throughout the year to promote the Vanoi Valley, from gastronomic tours to candlelight evenings at the ancient mills.
Attending the Brugne Festival means immersing yourself in the most authentic and intimate side of Trentino, far from the more crowded tourist destinations. The Vanoi Valley, with its forests, historic mills, and living rural traditions, offers visitors a simple and sincere experience, where faith, conviviality, and mountain flavors intertwine in a single day of celebration.
