High-altitude wine tourism among the vineyards of Santa Cristina Gela
Cantine Aperte is Italy's most important wine tourism event, promoted by the Wine Tourism Movement: on the last Sunday of May, wineries across the peninsula throw open their gates to the public to showcase the work behind the vineyard and the cellar. In Sicily, one of the most evocative destinations is the Baglio di Pianetto estate, nestled among the high-altitude vineyards of the municipality of Santa Cristina Gela, in the Province of Palermo, a short distance from Piana degli Albanesi.
Founded in 1997 by Count Paolo Marzotto, the winery is located in the Pianetto district, where vineyards climb hilly terrain that gives the wines freshness and character. This identity of high-altitude wines is the common thread of the Cantine Aperte day: a discovery of the territory, its Arbëreshë roots, and environmentally conscious viticulture.
During the event, you can taste the estate's organic labels, from native whites like Catarratto, Grillo, and Insolia to Nero d'Avola, also accompanied by extra virgin olive oil produced in the surrounding groves. Cantine Aperte at Baglio di Pianetto is the ideal opportunity to combine wine tourism, landscape, and Sicilian culture in a single experience, just a stone's throw from Palermo.
For the 2026 edition of Cantine Aperte, scheduled for May 30 and 31, the Wine Tourism Movement of Sicily announces a record-breaking edition with over thirty wineries taking part across the island. Among them is Baglio di Pianetto, the Santa Cristina Gela estate that has been participating for years with its high-altitude wine tourism offering.
As in previous editions, the day at the estate is expected to include cellar tours, masterclasses led by winemakers, tastings of organic wines, picnics in the vineyards, and live music. The precise program for Baglio di Pianetto, including dates, times, and ticket prices, will be published on the official website bagliodipianetto.it closer to the event.
The Baglio di Pianetto estate is located in Santa Cristina Gela (PA), between Palermo and Piana degli Albanesi. By car, it is easily reached from Palermo in about 30-40 minutes by taking the SS624 towards Sciacca and then following the signs for Santa Cristina Gela and Piana degli Albanesi.
Participation in Cantine Aperte is by reservation, with an entrance ticket that includes tastings and a wine glass. It is recommended to book in advance on the official website bagliodipianetto.it, as places are limited. Always check the updated date, times, and program before setting off.
