The grand opera, ballet, and symphonic season at Italy's largest opera house
Inaugurated in 1897 and dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo is the largest opera house in Italy and one of the most imposing in Europe. Its majestic neoclassical architecture, overlooking Piazza Verdi in the heart of Palermo's historic center, has been the cultural symbol of the city and all of Sicily for over a century. Every year, the Fondazione Teatro Massimo brings this space to life with a season that weaves together opera, ballet, and the great symphonic repertoire.
The 2025/26 season, curated under the artistic direction of Alvise Casellati and the superintendency of Marco Betta, is titled "Anime in bilico, oltre i confini": a common thread that runs through operas and ballets, eras and styles, exploring the thresholds of existence between light and shadow, reality and imagination, destiny and desire. Special attention is given to the great female figures of melodrama, from the victims of the Aleko/Pagliacci diptych to Queen Semiramide, and from Aida to Gilda in Rigoletto.
The ballet company's season, directed by Jean-Sébastien Colau, includes great classics and new choreography: Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Don Quichotte, Caravaggio, and The Sleeping Beauty. The concert season opens with an inaugural concert dedicated to "The Leopard" and continues with the traditional New Year's Concert and a packed symphonic calendar, involving the Orchestra, the Chorus, the Children's Chorus, and all the Foundation's staff.
Attending a performance at the Teatro Massimo means experiencing the great Italian operatic tradition in an extraordinary architectural setting, made famous by cinema. The programming, spread throughout the year, makes the theater a landmark for classical music lovers and the many visitors who come to Palermo, the capital of Sicily.
The operatic program of the Teatro Massimo brings together eight titles: the diptych Aleko/Pagliacci by Rachmaninov and Leoncavallo (from November 21, 2025, conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta), La bohème by Puccini, Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, Semiramide by Rossini for the first time at the Massimo, Le convenienze e inconvenienze teatrali by Donizetti with Nicola Alaimo, Aida by Verdi, Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni, and Rigoletto by Verdi with the Palermo debut of Ludovic Tézier.
The ballet company, directed by Jean-Sébastien Colau, presents Swan Lake, Don Quichotte, Caravaggio, and The Sleeping Beauty. The concert season opens on December 4, 2025, with a concert dedicated to "The Leopard" and continues with the New Year's Concert and a rich symphonic calendar.
The Teatro Massimo is located in Piazza Verdi, in the historic center of Palermo, easily reachable on foot from the central station and well-served by urban public transport. The Falcone-Borsellino Airport in Punta Raisi is about 35 km away, connected by shuttle bus and train.
Tickets and subscriptions are on sale at the theater box office (open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30-15:30), via the call center, and online at teatromassimo.it and ticketone.it. The Under 35 Card (€10) is available with discounted rates for young people: opera in the stalls from €30, ballet from €25, concerts from €15.
We recommend booking in advance for the most popular titles. Guided daytime tours of the theater are also organized, ideal for those who wish to discover its architecture and history.
