About Canicattì Carnival

In the heart of the Agrigento province, the Canicattì Carnival is one of Sicily's most anticipated festivals. Established in 1999, it has quickly grown to become the island's third most significant carnival, following those of Acireale and Sciacca. High-quality artistic floats, equipped with sophisticated mechanical movements, parade through the city center accompanied by dozens of dance groups with choreographies and anthems dedicated to the floats' themes. Four days of music, masks, gastronomy, and fun for all ages in the center of Canicattì.

The Canicattì Carnival, the pride of the Agrigento province

The Canicattì Carnival takes place in Canicattì, a populous town in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of south-central Sicily. Born in 1999 through the collaboration between local associations and the Municipality, which created the first modest floats, the event has grown rapidly: significant results were already visible by the third edition, eventually reaching about eight floats in 2003 and later exceeding a dozen, attracting thousands of visitors from across the island.

The third most important carnival in Sicily

Today, the Canicattì Carnival is recognized as the third most important carnival in Sicily, right after the famous carnivals of Acireale and Sciacca. Its distinctive feature is the high-quality allegorical floats, meticulously crafted in both artistic modeling and mechanical movements. They are accompanied by dance groups, composed of dozens of young people who carefully prepare choreographies and musical anthems dedicated to the themes of the floats, bringing the city center to life with colors, costumes, and joy.

Four days of festivities in the city center

During the peak days of the Carnival, the main streets of Canicattì — from Via Vittorio Emanuele to other central arteries — are filled with floats, masks, and visitors. The program alternates parades of allegorical floats and costumed groups with entertainment for the little ones, including shows dedicated to children, and moments for local schools, which participate with their own choreographic groups. There is no shortage of areas dedicated to gastronomy with local products, street food stands, and musical evenings with DJ sets under the stars, extending the party late into the night.

A vibrant and participatory tradition

The Canicattì Carnival is much more than a simple parade: it is a moment of strong identity for the community of Canicattì, the result of the work of artists, master float builders, associations, and the local Float Builders' Union. Each edition is the result of months of preparation in the workshops, where the imposing papier-mâché structures take shape. For visitors, attending the Canicattì parades means discovering one of the most authentic and lively expressions of the Sicilian carnival, far from the major tourist circuits but of great quality.

Canicattì Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Canicattì Carnival takes on a different form: due to economic and logistical issues, the Float Builders' Union did not create the allegorical floats. The festival therefore focuses on entertainment, music, and costumed groups for children and adults, with parades along the city center streets and in Piazza Dante.

For the 2026 edition, the Canicattì Carnival changes its face: as reported by the local press in January 2026, the Float Builders' Union was unable to create the allegorical floats due to economic and logistical issues related to previous editions. The event still takes place, focusing on entertainment, music, and costumed groups for children and adults.

The released program includes the opening on Saturday, February 10, on Viale Regina Margherita with a parade of dance groups and street artists; Sunday, February 11, features entertainment and shows at the municipal gardens of Viale della Vittoria; Monday, February 12 (Fat Thursday), features the parade of school choreographic groups, starting from Piazza IV Novembre and arriving in Piazza Dante. The main initiatives are concentrated in Piazza Dante and the center of Canicattì.
