The sustainable food and wine walking tour in Portula, in the heart of Valsessera
Camminan Mangiando is the roving food and wine event that brings Portula to life every year. This small town in the Province of Biella, Piedmont, is nestled in the lush greenery of the Valsessera valley. The concept is simple yet irresistible: a walk along the village trails and through its hamlets, interspersed with gastronomic stops where local restaurateurs serve their signature dishes. You walk, chat, discover the landscape, and sit down to eat, creating a perfect blend of flavor and nature that makes the day ideal for families, groups of friends, and lovers of mountain cuisine.
The event is conceived and managed by the Pro Loco Portula APS, in collaboration with local restaurateurs and village volunteers. The starting point is the Granero car park, from which the route winds through the most picturesque spots in the municipality. The morning gathering is when participants collect their materials and prepare for the walk, creating a festive atmosphere that involves the entire Portula community.
Starting with the 2026 edition, Camminan Mangiando stands out for a major achievement: it is the first event in the province of Biella to receive the Plastic Free "EcoEvent" certification. This concrete commitment to sustainability translates into precise measures: fully compostable plates and cups, drinks served in glass bottles, clearly marked recycling bins at every stop, and an anti-plastic gadget given to all participants. The day begins with an awareness session on the dangers of plastic pollution, led by local Plastic Free representatives, showcasing an event that combines the pleasure of dining with care for the land.
Camminan Mangiando is much more than a simple food festival: it is a way to experience Portula and the Valsessera valley from the inside, guided by the flavors of local cuisine and the hospitality of a mountain community. Participants discover corners of the village they would likely never see otherwise, accompanied by the slow rhythm of walking and the company of hikers, volunteers, and restaurateurs. It has become a highly anticipated date in the Biella summer calendar, successfully blending gastronomic tradition, social interaction, and environmental awareness.
Portula is located in the Valsessera valley, in the Province of Biella. By car, it can be reached via the Valsessera provincial road; the meeting point and start are at the Granero car park. The nearest train station is in Biella, from where you can continue by car or local transport links.
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking and bring a personal water bottle, in line with the initiative's EcoEvent philosophy. Advance registration with the Pro Loco Portula APS is recommended to reserve your spot at the gastronomic stops.
