About Samstag Märt

Every Saturday in summer, the Zer Miel garden in Gressoney-Saint-Jean transforms into the Samstag Märt, the Saturday market for mountain agriculture. A short walk from Castel Savoia and with Monte Rosa as a backdrop, nine small producers from the Lys Valley bring vegetables, fruit, jams, honey, artisanal bread, alpine cheeses, and sweets to your table. Now part of the international Slow Food network, the Samstag Märt is more than just a market: it's a story of peasant culture, landscape, and passion.

The Saturday market at the foot of Monte Rosa

The Samstag Märt – literally "Saturday market" in the Walser language – is the weekly event dedicated to mountain agriculture in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, in the Lys Valley (Aosta Valley). It is held in the Zer Miel garden, a short walk from Castel Savoia, with the Monte Rosa massif closing the horizon.

Products from the Lys Valley

Nine local producers from the Lys Valley participate in the market, offering the fruits of their labor: vegetables, fruit, jams, honey, artisanal bread, alpine cheeses (tome) and sweets. Zero-kilometer shopping that tells the story of the effort and quality of high-altitude agriculture.

A network of values

The Samstag Märt is not just a point of sale: in 2023 it became part of the international Slow Food network as a "Mercato della Terra" (Earth Market), and in 2024 it received the Bandiera Verde (Green Flag) from Legambiente. The idea behind it is "edible culture," moving from simple agricultural production to a broader concept made of ancient peasant knowledge, landscape care, and producer passion. It is organized by the association Paysage à manger.

Shopping and landscape

Shopping at the Samstag Märt also means enjoying a morning in one of the most beautiful corners of Gressoney-Saint-Jean, between the garden, the nearby Castel Savoia – summer residence of Queen Margherita – and the panorama of Monte Rosa. An experience that combines taste, nature, and community.

Samstag Märt — edition 2026

In 2026, the Samstag Märt returns every Saturday morning in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, from June until late autumn. In the Zer Miel garden, near Castel Savoia, nine producers from the Lys Valley offer vegetables, honey, jams, alpine cheeses, artisanal bread, and sweets, in a market that is part of the international Slow Food network.

The 2026 edition of the Samstag Märt confirms the Saturday morning appointment (10:00 AM–1:00 PM) in the Zer Miel garden in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, from June until the first weekend of November. The nine producers from the Lys Valley offer products from mountain agriculture – vegetables, fruit, honey, jams, alpine cheeses, bread, and sweets – in a zero-kilometer market recognized as a Slow Food Earth Market.
