Wine, gastronomy, and street art in the ancient village of Porta in Olevano sul Tusciano
Calici in Borgo is the wine festival that, in the heart of summer, reawakens the Antico Borgo di Porta, the medieval core of the Salitto district, in the municipality of Olevano sul Tusciano, in the province of Salerno, Campania. For three evenings, the arches, courtyards, and cobbled alleys of the village become a continuous path of tasting stations, communal tables, itinerant shows, and music: a simple and highly effective format that uses wine as a key to revive a part of the town that had remained on the sidelines for decades.
Born in 2025 on the initiative of the APS I Mulini in collaboration with AIS Salerno, the event was a success from its very first edition, drawing thousands of visitors to the narrow streets of Salitto. Mayor Michele Ciliberti presented it as the perfect representation of the development vision imagined for Olevano sul Tusciano, a territory that had previously remained outside major tourist circuits.
The heart of the event is the oenological selection. In the 2026 edition, the festival features over 50 wineries and approximately 100 labels from eight Italian regions, a significant leap from the four regions of the debut edition. Producers are present in person at the stands to share stories of their vineyards, vintages, and cellar choices: this is the aspect that most closely resembles a small wine fair, with the difference that everything takes place under the lights of a stone village.
Campania is naturally well-represented, with local whites, classic method sparkling wines, and the great regional reds — Aglianico, Taurasi, Piedirosso, Lacryma Christi — but the festival also looks beyond the region and, in 2026, opens up to international wineries for the first time. Organizationally, the festival has established a partnership with the Paestum Wine Fest and its founder Angelo Zarra, who brings a network of operators, buyers, and industry professionals to Salitto.
Alongside the wine stations, a food trail unfolds with ten food stands distributed along the route. The itinerant menu features specialties that tell the story of the Salerno hinterland and the coast:
Pairings follow the theme of the evening: seafood and fish appetizers with whites and sparkling wines, cured meats and aged cheeses with reds.
Calici in Borgo is not just a tasting event. Street artists and itinerant performances move through the alleys: stilt walkers, fire shows, giant soap bubbles, mimes, and poetry, while live music accompanies the three evenings until closing. It is a setup designed to keep people walking, stopping under an arch, and moving on to the next station: the village itself becomes the stage for the event, without massive stages or fences.
Olevano sul Tusciano is located about thirty kilometers from Salerno, in the Tusciano river valley, at the foot of the Picentini Mountains and close to the Sele Plain. It is a municipality known primarily for the Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo, one of the most important early medieval cave sites in Southern Italy, and for an agricultural landscape of olive groves and small hillside villages. Salitto, with its Borgo di Porta, is one of these historic centers: the desire to restore life and visibility to it gave rise to the festival.
For the organizers, the stated goal is to grow Calici in Borgo into one of the benchmark wine events in Southern Italy, demonstrating that culture, tourism, and food and wine can generate development even in the inland areas of Campania.
After the success of its debut, Calici in Borgo returns from July 31 to August 2, 2026, in the Antico Borgo di Porta, in the Salitto district of Olevano sul Tusciano, in the province of Salerno. The 2026 edition doubles its ambition: moving from four to eight Italian regions represented, with over 50 wineries and about 100 labels for tasting, and for the first time, opening its doors to international producers.
Alongside the wine stations, ten food stands are set up with specialties from the Salerno hinterland and the coast, while the path between arches and courtyards is enlivened by live music, stilt walkers, fire shows, giant soap bubbles, mimes, and poetry. Each evening has a different oenological theme, from Campanian whites and sparkling wines to the great reds of the South, culminating in a grand finale with masterclasses, cooking shows, and DJ sets.
A new organizational feature this year is the collaboration with the Paestum Wine Fest and its founder Angelo Zarra, who brings a network of operators, buyers, and industry professionals to the village. Mayor Michele Ciliberti presented the event as the symbol of the municipality's development vision, based on culture, tourism, and food and wine.
Opening evening with the presentation of the wineries and the first tastings under the lights of the village. The focus is on Campanian white wines and classic method sparkling wines, paired with seafood appetizers and local fish products.
Guided tastings, stories of the territory, and visits through historic arches and courtyards. The stars are the red wines: Aglianico, Taurasi, Piedirosso, and Lacryma Christi, paired with cured meats and cheeses from Cilento and the Picentini Mountains.
Closing evening with a special selection of labels, thematic oenological masterclasses, and cooking shows with traditional Salerno chefs. Closing with live music and DJ sets.
Stands open at 8:00 PM and close at 1:00 AM. Along the route: ten food stands (platters of cured meats and cheeses, pizza a portafoglio, zeppole, coppo di pesce, trittico di bruschette, gluten-free options), music in the alleys, and itinerant street artist shows.
Antico Borgo di Porta, Salitto district, 84062 Olevano sul Tusciano (SA), Campania. The village is pedestrian-only: comfortable shoes are recommended, as the alleys are cobbled and slightly sloping.
By car: Olevano sul Tusciano is about 30 km from Salerno; it can be reached via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway and the Sele Plain road network, then following signs for the Salitto district. Ample parking is available nearby, and during peak evenings, a free shuttle service to the village is provided.
Stands open at 8:00 PM and close at 1:00 AM, for all three evenings.
Free admission. You only purchase the tasting kit (glass, glass holder, and tastings included): in the first edition, the kit cost 10 euros with 4 tastings; for 2026, local sources indicate a kit price between 10 and 15 euros. Food stands are paid for individually.
