Five days of threshing, ancient crafts, and rustic flavors at Piano Martino
Every summer, in the Piano Martino area, the municipality of Palomonte — in the province of Salerno, within the Campania hinterland — transforms into a vast open-air museum of rural life. The Peasant Civilization Festival is not just a simple food festival: it is a collective re-enactment of field work, daily gestures, tools, and knowledge that have built the identity of this territory at the foot of the Alburni Mountains, between the Sele and Tanagro valleys.
Founded in the late nineties by the Pro Loco Palomonte, the event has grown to become one of the most representative summer appointments in the inland areas of the province of Salerno, attracting tens of thousands of visitors over just a few days.
The spectacular heart of the event is the threshing demonstration using vintage machines and oxen, performed before the public just as it was done before mechanization. Alongside this, an exhibition of historic tractors, carefully restored by local collectors, engages with a gathering of modern agricultural machinery, in a comparison that tells the story of a century of transformation in peasant labor.
The gastronomic side is entrusted to the rustic flavor stands, where one can taste dishes from the Cilento and Alburni culinary traditions. The absolute symbol of the Palomonte table is the cavatiello — fresh, hand-worked wheat pasta — celebrated in particular in its historic version, the "Cavatiello di Zè Nunziata," the subject of in-depth studies and conferences dedicated to the cereal supply chain and ancient grains. There is also cagliata (fresh curd), prepared live according to traditional cheesemaking techniques, along with cheeses, cured meats, wood-fired bread, preserves, and local wines.
Every evening, the festival comes alive with folk and traditional music shows: ballroom dancing groups, tarantella, accordion players, and traditional southern songs accompany the public until late at night. Performances are often itinerant among the stands, so that music and tastings blend in an authentic village festival atmosphere, far removed from standardized formats.
The Peasant Civilization Festival is also an event designed for the little ones, with educational workshops and experiential activities that bring children closer to the world of nature, farm animals, and the crafts of yesteryear. Archery, traditional games, and play areas set up in the woods complete an offering designed for families.
The choice of the Piano Martino location is no coincidence: it is a wide plateau shaded by centuries-old oak trees, which offers shelter from the summer heat and perfectly recreates the environment in which agricultural life once took place. The famous "lunch under the oaks" on Sunday is one of the most anticipated moments, with long outdoor tables set in the middle of the countryside.
In an Italy where many food festivals look the same, the Palomonte event preserves a rare documentary dimension: here, peasant memory is not a backdrop, but a living heritage, guarded by those who have truly practiced those trades. For those visiting inland Campania in summer, it is an opportunity to discover a side of the territory distant from the more crowded coastal routes, between the Alburni, the Sele valley, and rural villages.
From July 31 to August 4, 2026, the Piano Martino area in Palomonte hosts the twenty-eighth edition of the Peasant Civilization Festival. Five days dedicated to rural culture, typical products, and ancient crafts, with a program that alternates practical demonstrations, convivial moments, and evening musical shows.
Among the central themes of the 2026 edition is the promotion of the cereal supply chain and the Cavatiello di Zè Nunziata, a symbol of Palomonte's gastronomic tradition, to which a specific conference with the Regional Order of Agronomists is dedicated. The space dedicated to children is also confirmed, with the "Radici in Gioco" playground and the free "Discovering Nature" workshop.
Palomonte is located in the hinterland of the province of Salerno. By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (Salerno-Reggio Calabria), exit Sicignano degli Alburni, then follow signs for Palomonte and the Piano Martino area. By train: Sicignano degli Alburni or Contursi Terme station on the Salerno-Potenza line, then continue by car. Nearest airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi (Pontecagnano), about an hour's drive; alternatively, Naples Capodichino.
The event mainly takes place in the evening, with stands opening in the late afternoon and activities continuing until night. Lunch outdoors is also planned for Sunday. Admission to the area is traditionally free; tastings and meals are paid for at the stands.
