About Cagnano Carnival

The Cagnano Varano Carnival is one of the most anticipated events on the Gargano: for a few days between February and March, the streets of this town in the province of Foggia come alive with allegorical floats, costumed groups, music, and dancing. A popular, free event with a genuine soul deeply rooted in tradition, culminating in a competition for the best masks and floats, and featuring the historic local Masc'carun mask.

The Cagnano Varano Carnival

The Cagnano Varano Carnival is one of the most cherished popular festivals on the Gargano promontory, located in the town of Cagnano Varano, overlooking Lake Varano in the province of Foggia (Apulia). For a few days between February and March, the town's main streets and squares transform into an open-air stage, animated by allegorical floats, costumed groups, confetti, music, and performances that delight both adults and children.

A tradition rooted in popular culture

The event stands out for its authentic spirit, deeply connected to the town's local culture. The heart of the Cagnano Carnival is the historic local mask, the Masc'carun, a traditional figure that has long accompanied the parades and represents the festival's deep bond with its Gargano roots. Alongside the floats, there is no shortage of tastings of traditional dishes, often prepared by local women, which complete the festive and convivial atmosphere.

Allegorical floats and the costume competition

The program revolves around a competition dedicated to the most beautiful floats and masks, with various categories reserved for individual masks, groups, and floats. Participating groups parade through the town streets on scheduled days, creating a true spectacle of color, satire, and creativity. The awards ceremony takes place on the final evening, accompanied by entertainment and DJ sets.

An event for the entire Gargano

Organized by the Municipality of Cagnano Varano in collaboration with local associations and the Civil Service youth, the Carnival attracts visitors from all neighboring towns, positioning itself as one of the key parades in the Gargano area, alongside those of Manfredonia and Apricena. It is a free event, designed for families and children, blending entertainment, tradition, and a strong sense of community.
