Float parades and masquerades on the Gargano promontory
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Cagnano Varano Carnival is one of the most cherished popular festivals on the Gargano promontory, located in the town of Cagnano Varano, overlooking Lake Varano in the province of Foggia (Apulia). For a few days between February and March, the town's main streets and squares transform into an open-air stage, animated by allegorical floats, costumed groups, confetti, music, and performances that delight both adults and children.
The event stands out for its authentic spirit, deeply connected to the town's local culture. The heart of the Cagnano Carnival is the historic local mask, the Masc'carun, a traditional figure that has long accompanied the parades and represents the festival's deep bond with its Gargano roots. Alongside the floats, there is no shortage of tastings of traditional dishes, often prepared by local women, which complete the festive and convivial atmosphere.
The program revolves around a competition dedicated to the most beautiful floats and masks, with various categories reserved for individual masks, groups, and floats. Participating groups parade through the town streets on scheduled days, creating a true spectacle of color, satire, and creativity. The awards ceremony takes place on the final evening, accompanied by entertainment and DJ sets.
Organized by the Municipality of Cagnano Varano in collaboration with local associations and the Civil Service youth, the Carnival attracts visitors from all neighboring towns, positioning itself as one of the key parades in the Gargano area, alongside those of Manfredonia and Apricena. It is a free event, designed for families and children, blending entertainment, tradition, and a strong sense of community.
The 2026 edition of the Cagnano Varano Carnival is expected during the usual Carnival period, between February and early March. As of today, the organizers have not yet announced the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition.
As per tradition, the event is expected to feature parades of allegorical floats, costumed groups, the historic Masc'carun mask, and a competition for the best masks and floats, with an awards ceremony on the final evening. Information regarding dates, times, and routes will be released by the Municipality of Cagnano Varano and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.
The parades take place along the main streets and squares of Cagnano Varano (FG), including Piazza Aldo Moro and Via Aldo Moro, in the heart of the town center.
Cagnano Varano is located on the Gargano, in the province of Foggia. It can be reached by car via the SS693 and the provincial roads of the promontory; the nearest motorway exit is Poggio Imperiale (A14). During the parades, some streets in the center may be closed to traffic.
Participation in the parades is free and open to everyone.
