The festival of the historic peach from Massa Lombarda, featuring a producers' market and Romagna traditions
At the end of August, the center of Massa Lombarda, in the Province of Ravenna, comes alive for the Festa del Buco Incavato, an event dedicated to the historic peach that bears the town's name. Promoted by the Municipality of Massa Lombarda together with local associations as part of the summer program "E…state a Massa", the festival pays homage to a fruit that, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, made this land famous throughout Europe.
The Buco Incavato (in Romagnolo dialect, bus incavè) is a white peach with an intensely red-streaked skin and a characteristic deeply hollowed suture, from which it gets its name. Originating in Massa Lombarda at the end of the 19th century, it was the most cultivated variety in the early 20th century and was marketed under the brand "Pesca di Massa Lombarda". Today, it is recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT) of the Emilia-Romagna Region, protected by growers and enthusiasts who have recovered the last remaining trees.
The heart of the event is Piazza Matteotti, where fruit producer stands come alive in the evening: here you can buy peaches and plants, as well as honey, wine, and oil from the Massa Lombarda land, along with artisanal creations. There is also the Buco Incavato producers' market, where you can buy fresh fruit directly, along with tastings featuring the peach as the star.
In addition to the gastronomic aspect, the Festa del Buco Incavato is a project to recover agricultural traditions and protect small local excellences. Folklore shows, entrusted to Romagna's folk dance and music groups, accompany the evenings along with live artistic performances. The event is part of Massa Lombarda's rich summer program, which also includes the Folklore Festival and the Sagra delle Sfogline, and tells the story of the Bassa Romagna identity through a fruit that has become a symbol of an entire community.
The Buco Incavato Festival 2026 returns to Massa Lombarda (RA) with two events: Thursday, August 20th with Buco Incavato Young, the evening aimed at young people in Piazza Matteotti, and Friday, August 21st with the 15th edition of the festival dedicated to the historic peach of the territory.
As tradition dictates, Friday evening begins at 7:00 PM with the opening of the fruit producer stands, the Buco Incavato market, and tastings featuring the Massa Lombarda peach and typical local products (honey, wine, oil) and local crafts. The entertainment is provided by Romagna folklore, with the "Turibio Baruzzi" Romagna Folk Group.
