Feast of the Brazadèl of the Cross and of the New Wine

A festival that smells of tradition

In the heart of Romagna, in Castel Bolognese (Province of Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna), the Feast of the Brazadèl of the Cross and of the New Wine is one of the most cherished autumn events. Organized by the Pro Loco of Castel Bolognese in collaboration with the Municipality, the event celebrates the baked product that has been the symbol of the town for centuries: the brazadèl, an unleavened ring-shaped bread characterized by a particular double cooking process, first boiled in water and then baked in a wood-fired oven. This process makes it crispy, fragrant, and able to keep for a long time.

History and identity of the brazadèl

Legend has it that the brazadèl originated as food for smugglers crossing these borderlands: durable and long-lasting, it was perfect for long journeys. Today, it remains an emblem of Romagna's peasant culture and Castel Bolognese's identity, so much so that in March 2026 the festival was awarded the title of "Quality Festival" by the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy (UNPLI), with an award ceremony at the Senate of the Republic. This recognition is reserved for events that authentically promote the territory, traditions, and local products.

Throughout the weekend, the historic centre comes alive with offerings for all ages:

• Food stalls in a covered and heated area, with tastings of brazadèl, new wine, and traditional Romagna peasant dishes.
• Market dedicated to reuse, recycling, agricultural products, and ancient crafts along the town's streets.
• Live music in Piazza Bernardi and the Communal Cloister, from rock to local bands, including ballroom dancing and swing.
• Workshops for children, such as the "Little Bakers" workshop, to learn how to knead the brazadèl.
• Guided tours and cultural moments on the origins of bread and the history of the town.

The new wine, a partner in the celebration

Alongside the brazadèl, the protagonist is the new wine, the first wine of the new vintage, young and fragrant, which arrives on Romagna tables in November. The pairing of the double-cooked bread and a glass of new wine tells the story of autumn in this part of Romagna, halfway between Imola and Faenza, in a single sip and bite.
