About Feast of the Brazadèl

Every year, in the heart of Castel Bolognese, the Feast of the Brazadèl of the Cross and of the New Wine celebrates the town's most beloved bread: the brazadèl, a double-cooked ring-shaped bread – first boiled, then baked in a wood-fired oven – which makes it fragrant and long-lasting. Originally a food for smugglers crossing these lands, it is now a symbol of the community's identity. For an entire weekend in November, Piazza Bernardi and the Communal Cloister are filled with food stalls, markets, live music, and workshops, paired with the first new wine of the season.

A festival that smells of tradition

In the heart of Romagna, in Castel Bolognese (Province of Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna), the Feast of the Brazadèl of the Cross and of the New Wine is one of the most cherished autumn events. Organized by the Pro Loco of Castel Bolognese in collaboration with the Municipality, the event celebrates the baked product that has been the symbol of the town for centuries: the brazadèl, an unleavened ring-shaped bread characterized by a particular double cooking process, first boiled in water and then baked in a wood-fired oven. This process makes it crispy, fragrant, and able to keep for a long time.

History and identity of the brazadèl

Legend has it that the brazadèl originated as food for smugglers crossing these borderlands: durable and long-lasting, it was perfect for long journeys. Today, it remains an emblem of Romagna's peasant culture and Castel Bolognese's identity, so much so that in March 2026 the festival was awarded the title of "Quality Festival" by the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy (UNPLI), with an award ceremony at the Senate of the Republic. This recognition is reserved for events that authentically promote the territory, traditions, and local products.

What to experience in the square

Throughout the weekend, the historic centre comes alive with offerings for all ages:

  • Food stalls in a covered and heated area, with tastings of brazadèl, new wine, and traditional Romagna peasant dishes.
  • Market dedicated to reuse, recycling, agricultural products, and ancient crafts along the town's streets.
  • Live music in Piazza Bernardi and the Communal Cloister, from rock to local bands, including ballroom dancing and swing.
  • Workshops for children, such as the "Little Bakers" workshop, to learn how to knead the brazadèl.
  • Guided tours and cultural moments on the origins of bread and the history of the town.

The new wine, a partner in the celebration

Alongside the brazadèl, the protagonist is the new wine, the first wine of the new vintage, young and fragrant, which arrives on Romagna tables in November. The pairing of the double-cooked bread and a glass of new wine tells the story of autumn in this part of Romagna, halfway between Imola and Faenza, in a single sip and bite.

Why it's worth the trip

The Feast of the Brazadèl is an authentic, popular, and family-friendly festival, far from large-scale events: here, visitors come to taste a unique product, listen to good music, and soak up the atmosphere of a Romagna village that proudly preserves its roots.

Feast of the Brazadèl — edition 2026

Following the prestigious "Quality Festival" UNPLI award received in March 2026, the Feast of the Brazadèl of the Cross and of the New Wine is eagerly awaited in Castel Bolognese for its new edition in November 2026, with the usual weekend dedicated to the typical double-cooked bread and the first wine of the season.

The new edition of the Feast of the Brazadèl of the Cross and of the New Wine is expected in Castel Bolognese (RA) in November 2026, following the tradition of holding the event on the weekend of the new wine's arrival. Currently, the Pro Loco of Castel Bolognese, the event organizer, has not yet published the official dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition.

Based on previous editions, one can expect two days filled with food stalls offering brazadèl, new wine, and traditional Romagna dishes, a market for reuse and agricultural products, live music in Piazza Bernardi and the Communal Cloister, and workshops for children. The complete program will be announced by the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.

Programme Feast of the Brazadèl 2026
