The seaside village of Brucoli celebrates the sea through taste, history, and tradition

In the heart of summer, the ancient seaside village of Brucoli — a hamlet of the Municipality of Augusta, in the province of Syracuse — comes alive with the Swordfish Festival, an event that weaves together gastronomy, maritime culture, and historical memory. Promoted by the Associazione Borgo Marinaro in collaboration with the municipal administration, the festival was created to showcase a territory with a strong maritime vocation, officially recognized by the Sicilian Region as a "seaside village".
The heart of the festival beats in Piazza Castello Aragonese and along the picturesque Porto Canale, the natural inlet that has welcomed the boats of Brucoli's fishermen for centuries. Here, between the walls of the 15th-century fortress and the waters of the canal, the festival evenings take place: live cooking shows featuring swordfish preparation, tastings, cultural meetings, and musical performances that entertain the public until late at night.
The absolute star is swordfish, grilled and served in dishes that tell the story of Sicilian seafood cuisine, accompanied by cocktails, fruit salads, and local fish specialties. Alongside the food, the festival dedicates ample space to cultural meetings: conferences on the history of Brucoli, the ancient tuna fishery, and the village's economy, with the participation of local associations like Gisira and regional scholars. It is a formula that combines the pleasure of dining with the rediscovery of the town's maritime roots.
Reaching its second edition in 2025, the Swordfish Festival has already established itself as a fixed summer appointment in Brucoli and the Augusta area, capable of attracting residents and tourists alike thanks to the village's setting and the authenticity of its offerings. The event is part of a tourism promotion path aimed at showcasing one of the most characteristic villages on the Syracuse coast, with its castle, the Porcaria River, and the timeless charm of the Porto Canale.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Brucoli Swordfish Festival have not yet been announced by the Associazione Borgo Marinaro. As it is now a recurring summer event in the seaside village of Brucoli (Augusta, province of Syracuse), it is likely that the festival will be repeated in the usual window at the end of August. The program, as in previous editions, is expected to alternate swordfish-based cooking shows, tastings, cultural talks on the history of the village, and musical evenings in Piazza Castello Aragonese and at the Porto Canale. For official dates and the program, please wait for the organizers' announcement.
