About Christmas in Augusta

Christmas in Augusta is the grand holiday program organized by the Municipality of Augusta, in the province of Syracuse. From December 6th to January 6th, the historic center of the citadel transforms into a widespread stage filled with lights, music, and traditions. Featuring craft markets in Piazza D'Astorga, an ice skating rink in Piazza Duomo, the Nativity Scene Trail, wandering bagpipers, the Augusta Gospel Festival, and the massive New Year's Eve celebration in Piazza Castello, it is the event that lights up the holidays across the entire Megarean area, from Augusta to the hamlet of Brucoli.

Christmas in the Megarean citadel

Every year, from December 6th to January 6th, the Municipality of Augusta (Syracuse province, Sicily) turns its historic center into a vast festive village. Christmas in Augusta is a widespread program that weaves together lights, music, markets, children's shows, and folk traditions, enlivening the squares and streets of the citadel overlooking the gulf for over a month. It has become one of the most anticipated events in the region, drawing families and visitors from across the province.

Lights, markets, and an ice rink

The festivities kick off on December 6th with the lighting of the artistic illuminations and the Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo, standing twelve meters tall and adorned with hundreds of meters of lights. On the same day, the ice skating rink opens, one of the most popular attractions for children. At the heart of the holiday season, Piazza D'Astorga hosts the Christmas markets: between craft and antique stalls managed by the Pro Loco and the "ArtigianCity" market, these stalls accompany the days leading up to Christmas.

The Nativity Scene Trail and traditions

  • The Nativity Scene Trail: a route featuring nativity scenes set up in churches, squares, and shop windows, with the participation of schools, associations, and private citizens;
  • Wandering bagpipers, who bring the ancient sounds of the Sicilian Christmas to the streets, including the traditional Gathering of Sicilian Bagpipers;
  • Choral concerts and local bands, featuring the Iubilaeum Polyphonic Choir and the "Federico II โ€“ City of Augusta" Band;
  • The Augusta Gospel Festival, now in its third edition, featuring evenings of gospel music.

New Year's Eve in Piazza Castello

The highlight of the program is the New Year's Eve celebration in Piazza Castello, at the foot of the Swabian Castle, featuring a major concert in the square and a DJ set that accompanies the midnight toast and keeps the party going until late at night. It is the event that draws the largest crowds every year and closes the citadel's year in music.

Brucoli and the Epiphany

Christmas in Augusta is truly widespread: even the hamlet of Brucoli, with its seaside village, participates with parades, entertainment, and music. The festivities conclude on January 5th and 6th with the Charity Befana and a final concert, blending solidarity, treats for children, and the arrival of the traditional Befana witch. A full month during which Augusta, in the heart of the Syracuse province, experiences its Christmas as a great community celebration.
