About Ginestredda Festival

In Villasmundo, a village near Melilli in the province of Syracuse, the Ginestredda Festival celebrates the area's most beloved local specialty: a crescent-shaped, leavened dough pastry, fried to perfection and filled with savory ingredients according to a recipe passed down through generations. Held over two evenings in Piazza Risorgimento, the event features food stalls, local Iblei products, live music, and comedy, marking the official start of the festival season in the 'Terrazza degli Iblei' region.

Villasmundo's signature celebration

The Ginestredda Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Villasmundo, a district of the municipality of Melilli, in the province of Syracuse. Though a relatively recent addition to the local calendar, it has quickly established itself as the village's premier event, kicking off the festival season for the Terrazza degli Iblei alongside other local gatherings in Melilli and Cittร  Giardino.

The ginestredda: a culinary icon

At the heart of the festival is the ginestredda: a crescent-shaped, leavened dough pastry, prepared using an ancient traditional recipe and stuffed with a variety of savory fillings. Options range from classic ham and cheese to fried eggplant, mozzarella, and tomato, or even spicy salami with mozzarella and olives. Every bite tells a culinary story deeply rooted in the identity of the Villasmundo community.

More than just ginestredda

Recent editions have introduced a new gastronomic highlight called "La Terrazza", an original creation paying tribute to the local area. Throughout the streets and in Piazza Risorgimento, food stalls offer a chance to sample local specialties in a festive atmosphere that blends authentic flavors, folk traditions, and a strong sense of community.

Music, comedy, and conviviality

The Ginestredda Festival is about more than just food: the evenings are brought to life by live music, comedy acts, and entertainment for all ages, featuring artists and groups from across Sicily. The event also includes an open forum for citizens to discuss the preservation of local traditions, culture, and collective memory. Admission is free.

A must-visit event

For those exploring southeastern Sicily and the Iblei area, the Ginestredda Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover a local delicacy rarely found outside the region and to experience the genuine hospitality of a small Sicilian village. Villasmundo is easily accessible from Syracuse, Augusta, and the Catania-Syracuse motorway.
