The traditional December fair in the heart of the Borgata Santa Lucia district in Syracuse

The Santa Lucia Fair is one of the most anticipated and deeply rooted events in the winter calendar of Syracuse, in Sicily. It takes place every year in December, coinciding with the festivities dedicated to the city's patron saint, the Syracusan virgin martyr Saint Lucy. For about ten days, stalls take over the Borgata Santa Lucia area, around the square of the same name, transforming the neighborhood into a large open-air market filled with colors, scents, and a festive Christmas atmosphere.
The fair brings together dozens of street vendors, divided into food and non-food sectors. Among the stalls, you can find:
The selection of vendors is managed through a call for applications by the Municipality of Syracuse, which publishes the ranking of admitted vendors each year and defines the layout and rules of the event.
The fair is inseparable from the religious celebrations in honor of Saint Lucy, who was martyred in Syracuse in 304 AD and is depicted with a plate of eyes, a symbol of light and sight. The highlight is the procession of the silver statue, a work created in 1599 by the goldsmith Pietro Rizzo, which travels through the city streets on December 13th and during the days of the octave. The spiritual heart of the festivities is the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro, built on the site of her martyrdom.
Among the gastronomic traditions linked to the anniversary, the cuccìa stands out—a dessert made with boiled wheat, ricotta, or cream, prepared according to the custom that calls for abstaining from bread and pasta on Saint Lucy's Day. The fair is the ideal opportunity to rediscover these flavors and the typical products of the Syracuse area.
More than just a commercial fair, the event represents a moment of strong identity for the community of Syracuse, where popular devotion, street commerce, and neighborhood social life merge. The event, organized by the Municipality in the Province of Syracuse, attracts residents and visitors every year, confirming itself as a staple of the local Christmas season.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Lucia Fair in Syracuse is expected, as per tradition, in the month of December, on the occasion of the celebrations dedicated to the city's patron saint. At the moment, the Municipality of Syracuse has not yet published the official dates or the call for applications for the selection of vendors. The usual presence of stalls with sweets, local products, handicrafts, and gift items around Piazza Santa Lucia is expected. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
The fair is held every year in December, in the days leading up to the patron saint's feast (December 13th), generally for about ten days.
