The Saint Nicholas Festival is the heart of summer in Brucoli, the ancient seaside village that is part of the Municipality of Augusta, in the province of Syracuse, in south-eastern Sicily. Nestled around a narrow natural inlet dominated by an Aragonese castle, Brucoli celebrates its patron saint in the last week of July, transforming its small harbor and squares into an open-air stage. It is one of those patronal feasts where religious and popular dimensions are inextricably intertwined, involving the entire community and the many tourists who flock to the village during the peak beach season.
The festivities do not end on the patronal day alone: for an entire week, the village comes alive with a rich program designed for all ages. It features a mix of theatrical performances, singing and dance shows, folklore evenings with local groups, sports activities, tournaments, and traditional games for children and adults.
The most anticipated moment is the sea procession on the final Sunday. After the solemn morning mass and the laying of a laurel wreath at the war memorial, the venerated statue of Saint Nicholas leaves the church amidst cannon fire in the afternoon and is embarked for the evocative procession along the coast. A wreath of flowers is cast into the sea in memory of the fallen, while the faithful follow the saint from boats and the shore. In the evening, the statue returns to travel through the streets of the village in a land procession, before the grand nighttime fireworks display that illuminates the harbor and closes the festivities.
The festival is organized by the Municipality of Augusta with the parish and the local committee. In 2025, the "Brucoli Summer and Saint Nicholas Festival" initiative received a 20,000 euro grant from the Sicilian Region as part of the program for strengthening social cohesion, confirming the identity and tourism value of this event for the entire seaside village.
At the moment, the official calendar for the 2026 edition of the Saint Nicholas Festival in Brucoli (Augusta, province of Syracuse) has not yet been released. Based on previous editions, a week of festivities is expected during the last week of July, featuring traditional games, rowing regattas, evening shows, and the traditional sea procession of the saint's statue on the final Sunday. This page will be updated as soon as the detailed program is published.
Brucoli is a district of Augusta (province of Syracuse), on the Ionian coast of Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the A18/E45 Catania-Syracuse motorway, taking the Augusta exit and continuing towards the seaside village. The reference railway station is Augusta, on the Catania-Syracuse line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 40 km away.
The festivities take place in the last week of July, with the patronal day and the sea procession on the last Sunday of the month.
During the day of the festival, a limited traffic zone (ZTL) is in effect in the village: it is best to arrive early and park in the outer areas. The village is small and crowded in the peak summer season: it is advisable to book accommodation in Augusta or the surrounding area well in advance.
