"Musig & Genuss": Brass music and local flavors in the heart of the Passeier Valley

"Musig & Genuss" is a series of summer brass band concerts held in the center of San Leonardo in Passiria (known as St. Leonhard in Passeier in German), in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, South Tyrol. From late May to mid-October, the event evenings blend the tradition of brass band music with tastings of local products, turning the town's Raiffeisen Square into an open-air lounge filled with music.

The Musikkapelle "Andreas Hofer" and the valley's bands

The stars of the festival are the brass bands (Musikkapellen) of the Passeier Valley, led by the Musikkapelle "Andreas Hofer" of San Leonardo, which takes its name from the Tyrolean hero born right here at the Sandhof farm. Throughout the season, other bands from the valley, such as those from Walten and neighboring hamlets, also perform, creating a rich calendar of concerts that accompanies the town's entire summer.

Music and tasting: The Apfelkiechl of the local farm women

The charm of "Musig & Genuss" lies in the pairing of brass band repertoire with local gastronomic specialties. During the evenings featuring the Musikkapelle "Andreas Hofer", the women of San Leonardo prepare Apfelkiechl, traditional apple fritters, while other dates offer the chance to sample mountain cheeses, Alpine specialties, and products from the valley's farms. It is an authentic way to discover the flavors and traditions of the Passeiertal.

A summer tradition in the town center

Concerts generally take place in the evening, starting around 8:30 PM, in the Dorfzentrum of San Leonardo, on Raiffeisen Square along Passeirer Straße. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a typical South Tyrolean village festival, complete with musicians in traditional uniforms, good food, and the stunning backdrop of the Passeier Valley mountains. The event is organized by the Tourismusverein Passeiertal (Passeier Valley Tourist Association) in collaboration with local brass bands.
