The Nisseno village unveils its Norman castle and the ancient mill trail
For one weekend in May, the small town of Delia, in the province of Caltanissetta, becomes part of the Borghi dei Tesori Fest, a widespread festival promoted by the Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation in collaboration with the Borghi dei Tesori association. The project involves dozens of small Sicilian towns that, over three consecutive weekends, open their monuments, palaces, churches, and sites usually closed to the public, with stories shared by local volunteers and youth. The philosophy is to experience Sicily at a slow pace, following the popular saying "un pedi leva e l'autru metti" (one foot lifts, the other steps).
The highlight of a visit to Delia is the Norman castle, affectionately called "lu Castiddazzu" by the locals: a fortress carved directly into the rock, already documented by the Arab geographer Al Idrisi. Between towers, arrow slits, the parade ground, and crenelated walkways, visitors take a journey into the village's past. During the festival, the castle serves as the backdrop for a flag-wavers' performance by the Associazione Folklore Petiliano, filling the fortress with color and sound.
From the town center, you can walk the ancient mill trail, a path that once connected Delia to nearby Naro and was dotted with old water mills. It is an itinerary that tells the story of rural life and the village's deep connection with its surrounding countryside.
Among the most beloved experiences is the cuddrireddra workshop, dedicated to the typical carnival pastries linked to the tradition of the castle's noblewomen and recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. Visitors learn how to prepare and taste this braided, fried specialty, a true symbol of Delia's gastronomic identity.
As in other towns on the circuit, access to sites and experiences is managed through coupons from the Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation, which can be purchased online via the official website or at local information points. Visits can be enjoyed independently, following the opening hours of each site, allowing you to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of an inland Sicilian town.
The Borghi dei Tesori Fest in Delia is the perfect opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of the province of Caltanissetta and central Sicily: a village where Norman history, popular traditions, folklore, and gastronomy intertwine in an intimate experience far from the main tourist flows.
The 2026 edition of the Borghi dei Tesori Fest featured Delia as a protagonist during the first of the three scheduled weekends, Saturday, May 9th and Sunday, May 10th, alongside other small Sicilian towns such as Alessandria della Rocca, Balestrate, Burgio, Caltabellotta, and Piana degli Albanesi.
The program in Delia revolved around the Norman castle "lu Castiddazzu", carved into the rock, with tours through towers, arrow slits, and crenelated walkways, as well as the flag-wavers' performance by the Associazione Folklore Petiliano. Visitors were able to walk the ancient mill trail towards Naro and participate in the cuddrireddra workshop, the carnival pastries recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. Access to all sites was managed via Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation coupons.
