About Bitto Cheese Festival

In September, Gerola Alta celebrates its most precious cheese with the Sagra del Bitto, a historic event in Val Gerola dedicated to one of Italy's most renowned alpine cheeses. With tastings, guided tours, music, folk parades, and a market of typical products, the festival showcases the cheesemaking culture of the Valtellina mountains. A journey into the flavors and traditions of the Orobie, in the province of Sondrio.

Bitto, the gold of the Valtellina Orobie

The Bitto Cheese Festival in Gerola Alta (Province of Sondrio) is the celebration of Bitto, an alpine cheese produced for centuries in the mountain pastures of Val Gerola and Valtellina according to traditional techniques. Now in its fifty-first edition, the festival is one of the most important events for understanding the cheesemaking culture of these mountains.

Mountain flavors and traditions

The event, organized with the support of the Pro Loco and local organizations, offers a rich program:

  • Tastings of Bitto and other typical local cheeses and products;
  • Guided tours to discover the territory and cheesemaking production;
  • Music and folk parades of Valtellina tradition;
  • Market of typical mountain products.

One valley, one cheese, one identity

Bitto is much more than a cheese: it is the symbol of the identity of Val Gerola and an alpine culture that endures over time. The festival enhances the work of producers and keeps alive the bond between Gerola Alta, its mountains, and its traditions, attracting food and wine enthusiasts from all over the province of Sondrio and beyond.
