The Orobic goat festival amidst mountains, farming, and tradition
The Regional Show of the Orobic Goat is the event that, every autumn, enlivens Casargo, in the Upper Valsassina and Province of Lecco, for Saint Martin's Day. The star is the Orobic goat, a native breed of the Bergamo and Lecco valleys, recognisable by its long hair, impressive horns, and extraordinary ability to adapt to the mountains.
The heart of the show is the parade and evaluation of the animals: a jury examines the animals and draws up the rankings, leading to the proclamation of the winners. Among the most anticipated moments is the election of the best male goat of the year, the male specimen with the longest hair and the most beautiful horns, which draws breeders and curious visitors from all over the region.
Alongside the livestock section, the weekend offers educational farms and workshops for children, a fair of typical products, local specialities and crafts, as well as entertainment with folk music, songs, and accordions. There is also a demonstration of chestnut drying, an ancient practice of mountain tradition, while catering is provided by the Pro Loco.
Organised by the Provincial Breeders Association of Como and Lecco in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Casargo, the show is not just a festival: it is a concrete tool for protecting a threatened breed and promoting mountain agriculture. An event that links rural economy, biodiversity, and popular traditions, in the heart of the Lecco mountains.
For 2026, the Regional Show of the Orobic Goat is expected for its 35th edition, following the previous 34, scheduled for the usual mid-November weekend linked to Saint Martin's Day. The event confirms the tried-and-tested format that has made it a reference point for breeders in the Upper Valsassina and the Orobic valleys.
The programme includes the parade and evaluation of the animals by the jury, the rankings and awards for the winners, along with educational farms, workshops for children, a fair of typical products and crafts, musical entertainment, and demonstrations of mountain traditions. The definitive dates and times will be announced by the Provincial Breeders Association of Como and Lecco and the Pro Loco.
The detailed 2026 programme will be published by the organisers closer to the event. Based on recent editions, the usual weekend structure includes:
