The transhumance festival between Albosaggia and Caiolo
Transhumance — the descent of herds from alpine pastures to the valley floor at the end of summer — is one of the oldest rites of mountain culture. In Valtellina, in the village straddling the Municipalities of Albosaggia and Caiolo, in the province of Sondrio, this moment transforms into a celebration with ScargaàMuut, an event that combines tradition, agriculture, community, and a touch of technological innovation.
The programme unfolds throughout the entire weekend. Friday evening opens with the pizzocherata, a tribute to Valtellina's signature dish; Saturday is dedicated to the youth night, while Sunday is the main day with the cattle parade and the grand market of typical products from Valtellina. Zero-kilometre gastronomy takes centre stage, with alpine cheeses, cured meats, and local specialities.
Behind ScargaàMuut is the work of the Fondazione Albosaggia, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Albosaggia and Caiolo, ARA Lombardia, and Coldiretti Sondrio, and over two hundred volunteers. The 2025 edition recorded a record of over six thousand attendees, a sign of how deeply rooted this festival is in the Valtellina events calendar.
For visitors to the province of Sondrio, ScargaàMuut offers a unique opportunity to understand alpine civilization: the work of the herdsmen, the value of local products, and the relationship between humans and the mountains that has shaped the Valtellina landscape.
The 2026 edition of ScargaàMuut is expected in the usual period of the second weekend of October, when transhumance brings the herds back to the Valtellina valley floor.
The programme will reprise the tried-and-tested formula: the pizzocherata on Friday evening, the youth night on Saturday, and on Sunday, the cattle parade with the market of typical Valtellina products and zero-kilometre gastronomy. The precise dates and detailed programme will be announced by Fondazione Albosaggia.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition will be published by Fondazione Albosaggia on the official website. The usual structure includes: Friday evening pizzocherata; Saturday youth night; Sunday cattle parade, market of typical products, and zero-kilometre gastronomy.
Albosaggia is located on the Orobic side of Valtellina, opposite Sondrio, reachable by car from the SS38 dello Stelvio. The heart of the festival is Piazza 5° Alpini in Albosaggia, with events also extending towards Caiolo.
For the pizzocherata and meals, online booking via the official website www.scargaamuut.it is recommended.
