The Carnival festival in the heart of the Canavese region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, as winter draws to a close, the town of Bairo celebrates its Carnival, one of those local festivals that have always marked the calendar of the Canavese communities. Bairo is a small village of about 800 inhabitants nestled on the slopes of the Ivrea morainic amphitheater, in the province of Turin, along the ancient Via Romea that once connected Ivrea to the Piedmontese capital. Here, as in all the towns in the area, Carnival is an occasion for gathering that involves both young and old.
The Canavese Carnival has a distinct identity, strongly linked to the Historical Carnival of Ivrea, the most famous in the region with its renowned Battle of the Oranges. In smaller towns like Bairo, the festival takes on a more intimate and familiar character: the protagonists are children in costume, colorful confetti filling the streets of the historic center, music, and the carefree atmosphere that accompanies these days.
There is no shortage of typical flavors of Piedmontese carnival cuisine, from fritters to bugie (traditional carnival pastries), to the great communal dishes of the Canavese tradition like bean soup and polenta, prepared and shared in the square according to a ritual that repeats year after year.
Organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality of Bairo, the Carnival is one of the moments of the year when the community recognizes itself and comes together. For those visiting the Canavese in winter, it is an opportunity to discover a village with an ancient history—already known in Roman times as Barrium and famous for the production of a prized herbal liqueur between the 15th and 20th centuries—while experiencing its most authentic and popular traditions.
The 2026 Bairo Carnival took place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, in line with the calendar of carnival events in the Canavese region. The date is noted in the event calendars of the Turin territory.
As per tradition, the festival enlivened the village's historic center with the participation of the community, in an atmosphere of shared joy among young and old.
