Ancient Fair of San Luca

One of Tuscany's oldest fairs

The Ancient Fair of San Luca is one of the most deeply rooted events in the history of Pontedera, a town in the Valdera area of the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. Its origins date back to 1471, when the Florentine Republic authorized a commercial fair to be held in conjunction with the feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist. For over five centuries, every October, the tradition has been faithfully renewed, making this event one of the longest-running in the Pisan territory.

Ten days of markets, Expo, and entertainment

For about ten days, Via Tosco Romagnola, opposite the Piazza del Mercato, turns into a large open-air exhibition space. The fair brings together dozens of exhibitors divided into thematic areas: trade and crafts, food and wine with local and regional products, environmental technologies, home furnishings, agriculture and gardening, as well as an automotive sector with car and motorcycle dealerships. It is a comprehensive showcase of the local economy that, edition after edition, strives to grow and innovate without losing its connection to the area's rural and mercantile roots.

The core identity of the event is the Expo, the area dedicated to the agricultural and rural world: agricultural machinery, vintage tractors, an educational farm, falconry demonstrations, and activities related to the canine and equestrian worlds bring the fair back to its origins as a major commercial event for the Valdera and Valdarno regions. It is an opportunity to rediscover trades, knowledge, and local products in a familiar and accessible setting for everyone.

The funfair and family festivities

Alongside the exhibition area, the large funfair has always been one of the most beloved attractions, with dozens of rides and amusements for adults and children open every day. There is no shortage of street food, live music, shows, and special markets that enliven the town center, with special days dedicated to children. Admission to the fair is free, confirming the popular spirit of a festival that has accompanied the Pontedera autumn for centuries.
