A weekend among the Etruscans, in the shadow of the Montefortini Tumulus
The Comeana Etruscan Festival is one of the most cherished cultural events in the municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato, in the heart of Tuscany. Every September, the olive grove surrounding the monumental Montefortini Tumulus transforms into an authentic Etruscan village, where historical re-enactors in costume stage the daily life and rituals of the ancient gentes who inhabited this area between the 8th and 6th centuries BC.
The Montefortini Tumulus, discovered in 1965 and standing about twelve meters high, is the most impressive testament to the Orientalizing period of Etruscan civilization in this part of Tuscany, along with the nearby Boschetti tumulus. It is in this extraordinary archaeological setting, along the Via Etrusca, that the festival takes place.
The program weaves together scientific outreach and spectacular moments. Free guided tours of the tomb chambers run at regular intervals throughout the afternoon, led by archaeologists and the Carmignano Archaeological Group. Nearby, the Etruscan village managed by re-enactment associations offers scenes of daily life, rituals, and demonstrations of ancient techniques.
A large space is dedicated to children, with educational workshops divided by age group: from making shields and crowns for the little ones to pottery workshops and activities focused on Etruscan discipline and the world of warriors for teenagers and adults. In recent editions, the program has been enriched with loop hikes between the Etruscan and Medici sites of the area and guided tours of the princely ivory collection at the Archaeological Museum of Artimino.
The convivial dimension is not forgotten: the food stalls are managed by local volunteer associations—including Amici di Ambra, Arci Comeana, the Misericordia of Comeana, and the Avis of Carmignano—offering local dishes and regional wines in a village-fair atmosphere that makes the event a moment of community as well as culture.
Promoted by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Carmignano in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Tuscan Museums and numerous local organizations, the Etruscan Festival is a completely free event designed for families, history enthusiasts, and tourists who want to discover the Etruscan roots of Carmignano and the province of Prato in an engaging way.
The 2026 edition of the Comeana Etruscan Festival is confirmed: the September festival is listed among the cultural events of the Municipality of Carmignano, as evidenced by the call for sponsorships published by the administration, with a deadline for sponsors set for August 15th.
At the moment, the exact dates and the daily program have not yet been published. Based on recent editions, a weekend in September is expected with the usual setup: an Etruscan village with re-enactments, free guided tours of the Montefortini Tumulus, educational workshops for different age groups, and food stalls run by local associations.
The detailed program will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
