About Viticuso Flavors and Traditions

At the end of August, the small village of Viticuso, perched in the mountains on the border between Lazio and Molise, opens its historic center for the Ancient Flavors and Traditions festival. An evening that blends local gastronomy with rural heritage, featuring re-enactments of wheat threshing and sheep shearing, stalls with local products, crafts, and folk music echoing through the alleys until late at night.

A village festival in the heart of the Ciociaria mountains

Viticuso is one of the smallest municipalities in Lazio: a few hundred inhabitants, a village nestled at over 700 meters above sea level on the far eastern edge of the province of Frosinone, bordering Molise and just a few kilometers from Cassino. It is in this mountain setting that, at the end of August, the historic center transforms into the stage for Ancient Flavors and Traditions, the festival that closes the Viticuso summer by celebrating the rural and pastoral culture that shaped the town.

Re-enacting threshing and shearing

The core of the event is the re-enactment of wheat threshing and sheep shearing, two tasks that for centuries defined the life of this mountain community. Before the audience, the movements of the past are repeated: wheat beaten as it was before machines, and sheep sheared by hand according to the pastoral tradition of the Apennines. This is not just a simple demonstration, but a passing of memory between generations, in a town where agriculture and shepherding were long the only possible economies.

Ancient flavors: the table of Viticuso

As the name suggests, the festival is also a journey into local gastronomy. Among the alleys of the historic center, you will find stalls and refreshment points serving dishes from the rural and pastoral cuisine of the Cassino area, along with a market exhibition of local products and handicrafts. Viticuso is, after all, a town that even dedicates a specific festival to its most famous specialty, the abbuoto (a lamb offal roll recognized with the De.C.O. label) in mid-August: food culture is taken seriously here, and the late August festival is one of its most genuine expressions.

Folk music in the alleys

The evening is accompanied by folk music. The 2025 edition, scheduled for August 30th and 31st, brought the concert of the Musical Cultural Association I Calanti to the historic centerโ€”a historic pizzica group from Ugento (Lecce) that had the square dancing to the rhythms of the Salento tradition. A meeting between Southern and Central Italy that perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: different traditions recognizing themselves in the same folk roots.

The Viticuso festival calendar

Ancient Flavors and Traditions is part of a busy late-summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Viticuso and local associations: the Abbuoto Festival in mid-August, the patronal feast of Saint Antonino the Martyr in early September, and neighborhood events that enliven the village throughout the season. For those visiting this part of Lazio, on the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, the festival is an authentic opportunity to discover a village off the beaten tourist track.

The 2026 edition

The event is recurring and is traditionally held on the last weekend of August, but the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. It is advisable to check the program closer to the summer on the channels of the Municipality and local associations.
