The late August festival in the historic center of Viticuso, featuring local gastronomy, wheat threshing, and sheep shearing
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Viticuso is one of the smallest municipalities in Lazio: a few hundred inhabitants, a village nestled at over 700 meters above sea level on the far eastern edge of the province of Frosinone, bordering Molise and just a few kilometers from Cassino. It is in this mountain setting that, at the end of August, the historic center transforms into the stage for Ancient Flavors and Traditions, the festival that closes the Viticuso summer by celebrating the rural and pastoral culture that shaped the town.
The core of the event is the re-enactment of wheat threshing and sheep shearing, two tasks that for centuries defined the life of this mountain community. Before the audience, the movements of the past are repeated: wheat beaten as it was before machines, and sheep sheared by hand according to the pastoral tradition of the Apennines. This is not just a simple demonstration, but a passing of memory between generations, in a town where agriculture and shepherding were long the only possible economies.
As the name suggests, the festival is also a journey into local gastronomy. Among the alleys of the historic center, you will find stalls and refreshment points serving dishes from the rural and pastoral cuisine of the Cassino area, along with a market exhibition of local products and handicrafts. Viticuso is, after all, a town that even dedicates a specific festival to its most famous specialty, the abbuoto (a lamb offal roll recognized with the De.C.O. label) in mid-August: food culture is taken seriously here, and the late August festival is one of its most genuine expressions.
The evening is accompanied by folk music. The 2025 edition, scheduled for August 30th and 31st, brought the concert of the Musical Cultural Association I Calanti to the historic centerโa historic pizzica group from Ugento (Lecce) that had the square dancing to the rhythms of the Salento tradition. A meeting between Southern and Central Italy that perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: different traditions recognizing themselves in the same folk roots.
Ancient Flavors and Traditions is part of a busy late-summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Viticuso and local associations: the Abbuoto Festival in mid-August, the patronal feast of Saint Antonino the Martyr in early September, and neighborhood events that enliven the village throughout the season. For those visiting this part of Lazio, on the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, the festival is an authentic opportunity to discover a village off the beaten tourist track.
The event is recurring and is traditionally held on the last weekend of August, but the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. It is advisable to check the program closer to the summer on the channels of the Municipality and local associations.
No official dates have been communicated for 2026. Based on previous editions, the festival should take place at the end of August in the historic center of Viticuso, in the province of Frosinone. The typical program includes the re-enactment of wheat threshing and sheep shearing, a market exhibition of local products and crafts, local gastronomy stalls, and folk music concerts. It is recommended to check the official announcement on the channels of the Municipality of Viticuso and the organizing associations.
By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Cassino exit, then follow signs for Cervaro and Viticuso along the provincial roads (about 20 km of uphill driving). By train: Cassino station on the Rome-Naples line, then continue by car or taxi.
The festival takes place in the historic center with free entry; food and drinks at the stalls are for purchase.
Viticuso is a mountain village at over 700 meters: even at the end of August, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a jacket. Parking is limited, so it is advisable to arrive early.
