About Saint Onuphrius the Anchorite

Every second Sunday of September, the Sant'Onofrio district of Alvito, in the Comino Valley (Frosinone province), celebrates its patron saint, Saint Onuphrius the Anchorite. Two days of faith and community spirit featuring a solemn procession accompanied by the Alvito City Band, the historic Sagne e Fagioli Festival, traditional children's games, live music, and a grand fireworks display to close the festivities. A deeply felt event that unites devotion, local gastronomy, and village joy in the heart of southern Lazio.

A patronal feast in the heart of the Comino Valley

The Celebrations in Honor of Saint Onuphrius the Anchorite are the most anticipated event in the Sant'Onofrio district, a small village within the municipality of Alvito, in the province of Frosinone, southern Lazio. Every year, on the second Sunday of September, the neighborhood gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious and secular dimensions, drawing locals and visitors from across the Comino Valley.

The hermit saint and local devotion

Saint Onuphrius the Anchorite, a hermit who lived in the Egyptian desert, has been venerated for centuries by the community that bears his name. The feast originated as an expression of deep-rooted popular faith, passed down through generations, and still retains the authentic character of the village festivals of the Frosinone area, where the sacred and the convivial coexist naturally.

A program of ritual and community

The festival typically spans two days. Saturday opens with the celebration of the evening Mass, preceded in the days prior by a preparatory triduum; the evening is dedicated to the Sagne e Fagioli Festival, a symbol of local peasant cuisine served in the festival square, accompanied by live music. Sunday is the religious heart of the event:

  • Solemn morning Mass;
  • Solemn procession of the Patron Saint through the streets of the village, accompanied by the Alvito City Band;
  • Eucharistic celebration in the square;
  • In the afternoon, traditional games and entertainment for children;
  • In the evening, musical performances and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display.

There is also the traditional raffle with the drawing of winning tickets, a classic of patronal feasts that accompanies the final evening.

Sagne e fagioli: the taste of tradition

The true gastronomic symbol of the festival is the Sagne e Fagioli Festival, now in its many-decades-long tradition. Sagne, a fresh hand-rolled pasta typical of southern Lazio, is served with a savory bean sauce according to the traditional peasant recipe of the Comino Valley. It is the moment when the district turns into one large communal table, where families, friends, and visitors gather around a simple yet identity-defining dish.

Alvito and the Comino Valley

Set in the evocative scenery of the Comino Valley, at the foot of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, Alvito is a charming village with its Cantelmo Castle, historic churches, and medieval alleys. The feast of Saint Onuphrius is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the Lazio Region, far from mass tourism circuits, and to experience the sincere hospitality of a community that proudly guards its roots.
