The historic livestock fair and medieval re-enactment at the foot of the Manfredonico Castle
The Ancient Castle Fair of Mussomeli is one of the most deeply rooted and iconic events in the Caltanissetta area. It takes place in the evocative setting of the Manfredonico Castle, the 14th-century fortress that overlooks the town of Mussomeli in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of Sicily. The fair is steeped in a multi-centennial tradition: originating as a major livestock market for the feast of the Madonna delle Catene, it has spanned over a century of history, reaching its 113th edition in 2025.
The beating heart of the event remains the livestock and agricultural equipment fair, a key reference point for breeders and farmers from across Sicily. Along the district, animal exhibitions are set up, with a special focus on native breeds such as the Comisana and Girgentana goat, the Barbaresca sheep, and the Valle del Belรฌce sheep, alongside a vast display of agricultural machinery and equipment. There are also educational workshops, technical conferences, and moments dedicated to promoting local agri-food products.
In recent years, the fair has been enriched by Castelfood โ The Taste Village, created in collaboration with Slow Food Sicily: a showcase of island biodiversity featuring street food stands, premium products, cooking demonstrations with chefs and producers, and tastings of local zero-kilometer specialties. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of the Sicilian hinterland, from cheeses and cured meats to local bread and traditional desserts.
The spectacular dimension of the fair is entrusted to the medieval historical re-enactment, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture. The historical pageant recreates the arrival of King Frederick III of Aragon, known as "the Simple," in Mussomeli: an evocative journey through time among ladies, knights, and nobles in period costumes. In the evening, the fortress is transformed by the "Animated Castle" event, populated by flag-wavers, drummers, jesters, musicians, stilt walkers, and fire-eaters who bring the medieval atmosphere to life within the ancient walls.
The event is intertwined with popular devotion: on September 2nd, the Madonna delle Catene, protector of prisoners, is celebrated. Inside the castle stables, converted into a church, religious services are held, and in the afternoon, the statue of the Madonna is carried in a procession along the avenue among the faithful, in a moment that unites the sacred with rural tradition.
Between photographic exhibitions on the history of the fair, play areas for children to interact with animals, artistic performances, and plenty of music, the Ancient Castle Fair is an event designed for all ages, capable of combining the rural memory of the municipality of Mussomeli with the pride of the province of Caltanissetta and all of Sicily.
The new 2026 edition of the Ancient Castle Fair of Mussomeli is scheduled for the turn of late August and early September, with an opening indicated around August 29th. At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the full program or officially confirmed the precise dates.
Following in the footsteps of previous editions, the major livestock and agricultural equipment fair, the Castelfood โ Taste Village with Slow Food Sicily, the medieval historical pageant, the evening "Animated Castle" event, and the procession of the Madonna delle Catene are expected. For confirmed dates and the event calendar, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the event.
