The Abruzzo festival celebrating the "a cocce capammonte" pepper with a culinary challenge between local districts
In the heart of the Abruzzo hinterland, between the Majella mountains and the Trabocchi Coast, the small town of Altino (Chieti province, Abruzzo) dedicates a major festival every late August to its most iconic product: the Altino sweet pepper, the historic "a cocce capammonte" variety. Known for its fruit pointing upwards and its delicate flavor, it is cultivated and sun-dried according to peasant tradition. The festival, now in its most recent editions, attracts thousands of visitors and turns the entire historic center into a widespread food and wine trail.
The beating heart of the event is the Culinary Palio of the Districts, a gastronomic challenge featuring the town's local neighborhoods. The seven districts—Altino, Briccioli, Fonte Lama, Le 6 Quartier, Le Vrecciuole sott'a lu monde, Mmèzze a mbrène, and Serranelle—set up elaborate menus in the village squares, showcasing local biodiversity. Juries award the coveted Palio trophy, as well as prizes for the "Signature Recipe," folklore, and best costume.
Along the route, visitors can taste dishes that tell the story of Abruzzo cuisine reinterpreted with sweet pepper: pasta and gnocchi seasoned with dried pepper, ventresca with peppers, arrosticini, bruschetta, rustic pizzas and focaccias, fried treats, and desserts. Regional wineries offer local wines, and at the end of the evening, pepper-infused cocktails are available for younger visitors.
Every square in the historic center hosts a musical group, with roaming music and folk performances animating the village until late at night. The atmosphere is that of an authentic Abruzzo village festival, where the entire community comes together to welcome visitors.
The Altino sweet pepper is more than just the star of a festival: the Association for the Protection and Valorization of the product has been working for years toward European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) recognition, aiming to protect a cultivation typical of the Sangro Valley towns. In this sense, the festival also serves as a showcase for agricultural biodiversity and sustainable farming in Abruzzo.
Admission to the event is free. Inside, visitors use special tickets convertible into food and drinks at the stands, with POS payment options available. The organization guarantees thousands of seats every evening, ample parking, dedicated shuttle services, as well as security and assistance stations.
The 17th edition of the Altino Sweet Pepper Festival will be held on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22, 2026, in the historic center of Altino (Chieti province, Abruzzo). Once again, the heart of the event will be the Culinary Palio of the Districts, with the town's neighborhoods competing to present full menus based on the "a cocce capammonte" sweet pepper.
The food and wine trail through the squares, live and roaming music, folk shows, and traditional services are all confirmed: free parking, shuttles from the Selva di Altino parking lot, and thousands of seats. Admission is free. The detailed program with the names of the musical groups and schedules will be published by the organizing Association in the weeks preceding the event.
Altino is located in the inland province of Chieti, Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro exit) or the Fondovalle Sangro road; the reference train station is Archi-Atessa-Perano on the Sangritana line.
Free parking areas (including for campers and motorcycles) are provided, along with a shuttle service from the Selva di Altino parking lot to the historic center, with dedicated buses for the elderly and people with reduced mobility.
Free admission. Food and drinks are purchased with special tickets at the district stands; POS payments are accepted.
