The festival of new wine, chestnuts, and new oil in the village of Treglio
Borgo Rurale is one of the most authentic food and wine events in the Abruzzo region during autumn. It takes place in the historic centre of Treglio, a small hillside town in the province of Chieti overlooking the Sangro Valley and the Trabocchi Coast. Every year, on the first weekend of November, the alleys and narrow passages of this medieval village come alive to celebrate three iconic seasonal products: new wine, chestnuts, and newly pressed olive oil.
What sets Borgo Rurale apart from traditional festivals is the absence of prefabricated stalls. Instead, the village's authentic cellars and ancient oil mills open their doors to visitors, transforming into taverns where you can sit and dine. Strolling through the alleys, you will discover spaces carved into the stone, filled with barrels, wine presses, and tools of rural life, in a journey that combines tasting with the heritage of the Frentano territory.
The menu is based on recipes passed down by the women of the village and prepared by over 300 volunteers from the Pro Loco. Typical dishes include arrosticini, pallotte cace e ove (cheese and egg balls), cod with roasted peppers, sagnette e ceci (pasta with chickpeas), fried pizza, and caciocavallo impiccato (hanging cheese), with options available for those with celiac disease. Everything is paired with new wine and local Abruzzo wines — such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Pecorino — as well as the essential roasted chestnuts.
Along the route, you will find live music in the corners of the village, craft markets, exhibitions, and entertainment, making the visit an immersive experience. The event, organised by the Pro Loco of Treglio APS ETS with the support of the Municipality, has been a benchmark for the entire Abruzzo region for over twenty years, attracting visitors from outside the region and featured on the official AbruzzoTurismo portal and the Trabocchi Coast itinerary.
The 27th edition of Borgo Rurale is expected in Treglio (CH) for the weekend of Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026, according to the official Pro Loco calendar. The event will feature the successful formula that made it famous: the cellars and oil mills of the medieval village transformed into taverns where you can taste new wine, chestnuts, new oil, and traditional Frentano dishes, amidst music and crafts. The full programme with times and services will be announced by the Pro Loco of Treglio closer to the event.
