The Nativity of Queen Margaret of Durazzo in the ancient village of Aiello
Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the district of Aiello in Baronissi (Salerno province, Campania) transforms into a village from another era. The Aiello Living Nativity, known to all as the Nativity of Queen Margaret of Durazzo, does not simply recreate the Nativity: it intertwines the Gospel narrative with local history and legend, restoring the village's most ancient identity. It is one of the most cherished Christmas events in the Irno valley, drawing an extraordinary number of visitors each year.
The narrative thread is deeply rooted in Salerno. Margaret of Durazzo, Queen of Naples, spent the final years of her life in Acquamela, where she died of the plague in 1412; her monumental tomb, a work by Baboccio da Piperno, is located in the Salerno Cathedral. The performance imagines the sovereign in prayer before a votive chapel when she hears three figures on horseback approaching: the Three Wise Men. Intrigued, she orders her vassals to accompany her to see what is happening and ends up entering the nativity scene herself, leading the procession as it climbs toward the grotto. A poetic invention built around a real historical figure, giving the scene an uncommon historical depth.
The route winds through the alleys of Aiello's historic center, one of the oldest parts of the municipality, and finds its heart in the cloister of the ancient convent of the San Domenico church. Over a hundred costumed actors bring a complete village to life:
The religious dimension remains central. The blessing of the nativity is accompanied by Christmas carols from the Schola Cantorum of the Aiello and Acquamela Parish, and the entire event originates from the parish of San Pietro Apostolo. It is not just a show: it is the community telling its own story, its faith, and its memory, in a village where every stone has a tale to tell.
The event is promoted by the Alvaa association together with the parish, with the support of the Municipality of Baronissi. The first edition dates back to Christmas 2008, when the historical pageant started from Piazza Trivio with the participation of the Queen; in December 2023, the association promoted the thirteenth edition. Since then, the event has continued uninterrupted and has become a permanent fixture in the municipal Christmas program.
The Aiello living nativity is part of the Vivi Baronissi a Natale program, which fills the municipality with concerts, children's workshops, shows, the Santa Claus Village, and nativity scenes set up in churches and homes from early December until January 6th. During the same week, you can also visit the living nativity in Capo Sava, another district of Baronissi: two different and complementary routes, just minutes apart.
Performances are held on evenings between December 26th and January 6th, usually starting at 6:00 PM. The Epiphany evening is the most spectacular, as it combines the Queen's historical pageant with the arrival of the Three Wise Men. Those who want to enjoy the route at a leisurely pace should arrive early: the alleys are narrow, and on busier nights, movement can be slow.
The Nativity of Queen Margaret of Durazzo returned to Aiello di Baronissi from December 26, 2025, to January 6, 2026, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the Irno valley. The ancient village lit up its alleys with costumed actors, artisan workshops, scenes of daily life, and the Nativity set up in the cloister of the ancient convent of the San Domenico church.
The event was part of the municipal Vivi Baronissi a Natale program, which accompanied the city until Epiphany with creative workshops, itinerant shows, gospel concerts in churches, the Santa Claus Village, and the two living nativity representations in the districts of Aiello and Capo Sava, both opening in the evening at 6:00 PM.
The highlight arrived on the evening of January 6th, with the historical pageant accompanying Queen Margaret of Durazzo on her visit to the nativity and, at 7:30 PM, the arrival of the Three Wise Men. A finale that every year gathers families, visitors from neighboring towns, and curious onlookers from Salerno along the route.
From December 26, 2025, to January 6, 2026 - living nativity route in the ancient village of Aiello, evening opening from 6:00 PM.
On the same evenings, the eleventh edition of the other living nativity of Baronissi took place in the district of Capo Sava (December 26, 27, and 28, 2025, and January 4, 5, and 6, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM).
Aiello is one of the eleven districts of Baronissi, a few kilometers from Salerno along the Irno valley. By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit Baronissi, then follow signs for the hillside districts. By train: Salerno station, then local bus or taxi to Baronissi (about 20 minutes). The ancient village is best explored on foot; it is advisable to park in the center areas and walk up along Via Indipendenza.
Admission to the living nativity route is free, as are the other events in the Vivi Baronissi a Natale program. Tastings of local products are offered along the way.
Wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing: the route is outdoors, uphill, and temperatures drop during December and January evenings. The evening performances are particularly suitable for families with children.
