The historic center of Giulianova transforms into Italy's largest open-air art gallery
There is one Sunday in July when the historic center of Giulianova, located in the province of Teramo overlooking the Adriatic Sea, fills with brushes, paints, and people. It is the day of AcquaLuceFuoco - The Colors of Tradition, an initiative that for years has been transforming mundane grey public utility boxes into small, permanent works of art. The name itself explains the project: water, light, and fire (acqua, luce e fuoco) are the three services (water, electricity, and gas meters) whose metal covers are painted by artists along the streets of Old Giulianova.
From morning until evening, about thirty-five artistsโmany coming from outside the regionโspread out through the alleys, stairways, and small squares of the historic village to paint. Each year, new creations are added to the existing heritage: there are now over 300 works scattered throughout the center, so much so that the organizers describe Giulianova as the largest open-air art gallery in the country. Strolling through the narrow streets of the village thus becomes a true artistic treasure hunt, with subjects ranging from traditional Abruzzese folk themes to the sea, and from portraits to scenes of daily life.
AcquaLuceFuoco is not just an art exhibition: it is, above all, a moment of community. The heart of the day is the shared lunch break, a community meal that brings together artists, residents, tourists, and curious onlookers, embodying the authentic spirit of the eventโone of art, creativity, participation, and conviviality. The initiative is promoted by the "Il Nome della Rosa" Cultural Circle, with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Giulianova and the collaboration of various local entities. Participation is completely free for artists, just as access is free and open to the public who wish to watch the works being created.
In a region like Abruzzo, rich in food festivals and patron saint feasts, AcquaLuceFuoco represents something unique: a street art and urban regeneration project that restores beauty and identity to the fabric of the ancient village, directly involving the citizenry. Defined by the municipal administration as a one-of-a-kind event and a staple of the Giulianova summer program, the initiative is highly anticipated and appreciated by residents of the historic center, the locals, and the numerous tourists who flock to the Teramo coast in the summer.
The 17th edition of AcquaLuceFuoco - The Colors of Tradition was held on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in the historic center of Giulianova, under the patronage of the Municipality. Once again this year, about 35 artists, many from outside the region, enlivened the alleys and squares by painting the grey utility boxes for water, light, and gas, adding new works to the more than 300 already scattered throughout the village. Councilor Nausicaa Cameli emphasized how the event continues to be a fixed and characteristic appointment of the Giulianova summer program.
