The medieval historical re-enactment of Tortoreto: Turturitus returns to 1234
The Baron's Palio is the most iconic historical event in Tortoreto, a coastal town in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo. Every year, in the heart of summer, the medieval village of Tortoreto Alto transforms into an open-air set: its narrow streets, alleys, and small squares relive the atmosphere of the 13th century, amidst the scent of taverns, the sound of drums, and the waving of flags. Organized by the Due Torri Cultural Association, the re-enactment has been running since 2001 and has become one of the most anticipated and meticulously curated events on the Teramo coast.
The re-enactment is rooted in a specific historical event. In 1234, Emperor Frederick II sent his vicar, Rinaldo di Brunforte, to visit the fiefdom of Tortoreto, then called Turturitus. For the occasion, Baron Roberto di Turturitus organized grand festivities, with games, music, and dancing in honor of the imperial guest. The Palio was born from this memory: a journey into the past that combines historical research, craftsmanship, and spectacle, offering visitors a vivid image of a medieval village in celebration.
The heart of the challenge lies in the two rival districts of the village, which compete every year for the Drappo, a banner painted specifically by a different artist for each edition. The Terravecchia district is symbolized by the dove, while Terranova is represented by the raven. The two teams face off in a wide range of historical gamesโtests of skill, strength, and dexterityโbefore an audience that fills the streets of the historic center. The neck-and-neck competition between the districts, almost always balanced, is what makes every edition unpredictable and exciting.
The highlight of the event is the majestic historical procession: over 350 costumed participants parade through the village streets, wearing garments faithfully reproduced from period paintings and images. Knights, ladies, musicians, flag-wavers, merchants, and artisans reconstruct the daily life and hierarchies of the Middle Ages, while in the afternoon, the streets are filled with stalls of traditional craftsmen. The Baron's Palio is included in the Mapping of Historical Re-enactments project promoted by the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage (ICPI) of the Ministry of Culture, a recognition that certifies its cultural value and philological rigor.
The event is divided into two parts: the opening evening in Tortoreto Lido, on the seafront, which kicks off the celebrations with shows and presentations, and the grand final challenge in the historic center of Tortoreto Alto, where the districts compete for the Drappo. Admission is free, and the festival attracts thousands of visitors every year, including residents, tourists from the Abruzzo coast, and historical re-enactment enthusiasts.
The 2026 edition, the twenty-third, confirms the two-part format. The opening evening kicks off the celebrations on July 21 at Tortoreto Lido, while the final challenge enlivens the historic center of Tortoreto Alto on Sunday, August 16. The two districts, Terravecchia (dove) and Terranova (raven), start with equal scores in their quest to win the Drappo.
