The patronal feast of Borgosesia, blending music, gastronomy, and Valsesia traditions
In Borgosesia, in the heart of the Valsesia region in the Province of Vercelli (Piedmont), the patronal feast bears a name that sets the tone: "A l'è San Peru al Borg", which translates to "It is Saint Peter at the Borgo" in the local dialect. Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the celebration reaches its peak on June 29th, when the Valsesian town honours its patron with a variety of events, music, and local traditions.
San Peru is not just a single day, but a series of celebrations spanning almost the entire month of June. The funfair, set up in Piazzale Milanaccio, has become an integral part of the festivities: the rides bring lights, colours, and energy, turning the square into a vibrant meeting point for families and young people for about two weeks. The rest of the programme is built around the funfair, organised year after year by the Municipality, the Carnival Committee, the Pro Loco, the parish, and local associations.
The social heart of the festival lies in the evenings organised by the Borgosesia Carnival Committee, the historic soul of the town's celebrations. In the dedicated event area, visitors can enjoy themed dinners (ranging from paella to grilled Florentine steak, mixed fried fish, and traditional specialities), a bar service with beer, and plenty of live music: tribute acts, bands, DJs, and shows accompany the nights in an informal, family-friendly atmosphere that draws crowds from across the entire Valsesia valley.
During the peak days, typically over the long weekend leading up to June 29th, the music moves to the historic centre: Piazza Mazzini, Via XX Settembre, Via Roma, and Via Sesone host concerts, ballroom dancing evenings, school performances, and "Aperitivi in Musica" (musical aperitifs) with shops staying open late. There is also no shortage of cultural events as part of the "Agorà del Borgo" initiative, dedicated to local associations and the artistic heritage of the collegiate church.
The San Peru programme also embraces motoring passions and activities for children. Recurring highlights include the Vespa Piaggio rally, classic car and motorcycle meets (featuring the famous Moto Guzzi bikes in Piazza Mazzini), the antiques and crafts market "Ricordi e creatività" on Via XX Settembre, and the "Arte in Festa" creative workshops for children. It is a comprehensive festival, capable of speaking to all generations and showcasing the identity of Borgosesia and the Valsesia region.
