The ceremony celebrating the coastal banner in Piazza Aldo Moro
The Zapponeta Blue Flag Festival is the annual event where the Municipality of Zapponeta, located on the Adriatic coast of the Province of Foggia, Puglia, celebrates the renewal of its Blue Flag status. This international recognition is awarded by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) to seaside resorts that excel in water quality, environmental management, safety, and services offered to bathers.
For a small town like Zapponeta, overlooking miles of wide, sandy beaches far from mass tourism, the Blue Flag represents much more than just an award: it is proof of a constant commitment to preserving its coastal heritage and a powerful draw for visitors seeking an authentic, well-maintained seaside destination.
The heart of the event is the official flag-presentation ceremony for tourism operators and beach clubs, held in the central Piazza Aldo Moro. In the presence of the municipal administration, led by Mayor Vincenzo Riontino, the award is symbolically entrusted to those who work daily to welcome tourists and maintain the high quality of the coastline.
The institutional part is always followed by a social gathering with a sweet and savory buffet open to the public and the traditional cake-cutting, before a live concert enlivens the square and officially kicks off the summer season. The evening thus combines civic pride with the popular, festive atmosphere typical of Puglian village celebrations.
The festival is not just an environmental celebration, but also a meeting point for the entire Zapponeta community, which gathers in the square to welcome the summer. Music, good food, and conviviality accompany the award ceremony in an atmosphere of participation that involves families, young people, and tourists alike.
As one of the youngest municipalities in Puglia, independent since 1975, Zapponeta boasts a long stretch of coastline on the Gulf of Manfredonia, characterized by dunes, fine sand, and an agricultural hinterland dedicated to vegetable farming. The Blue Flag, confirmed year after year, has become the symbol of this seaside and environmental vocation, and the festival celebrating it is now a tradition eagerly awaited by residents and vacationers.
On Sunday, June 21, 2026, Zapponeta celebrated its ninth consecutive Blue Flag with the traditional festival in Piazza Aldo Moro. The evening began at 8:00 PM with the official flag-presentation ceremony for tourism operators, followed by a rich sweet and savory buffet and the cutting of the cake, concluding with a live concert. A moment of celebration and pride for the community, which thus welcomed the 2026 bathing season.
The festival takes place in Piazza Aldo Moro, in the center of Zapponeta (Province of Foggia, Puglia).
By car: Zapponeta can be reached via the SS159 and the road network connecting Manfredonia and Foggia; the nearest motorway exit is Foggia on the A14. The reference train station is Foggia, from where you can continue by bus or car.
Admission to the ceremony, buffet, and concert is free of charge.
