Food, sustainability, and the new generation in the heart of the Canavese region
The Youth Biodiversity Festival is an event held in San Giorgio Canavese, a town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, in the heart of the Piedmontese Canavese. Conceived by the well-known RAI television personality Giuseppe "Peppone" Calabrese, the festival focuses on young people—Gen Z and Gen Alpha—challenging them to engage with the major issues of our time: conscious eating, sustainability, biodiversity protection, and the future of food.
The festival animates several symbolic locations in the town: the Youth House of Biodiversity in the historic market area, Piazza Ippolito, and the evocative Castle of San Giorgio Canavese. The festival is part of the broader Three Canavese Lands Reciprocity Festival, which unites the municipalities of San Giorgio Canavese, Agliè, and Castellamonte in a shared project to promote the local territory.
The program alternates between events open to the public and days dedicated to schools. Among the most popular activities are creative workshops, the Lab.Brick space dedicated to building with bricks, the PLAY installation featuring traditional wooden games, and the Talenteen talent show, an open stage for the artistic and musical performances of young people. There are also floral workshops held in celebration of Mother's Day.
Each edition brings a group of experts to San Giorgio Canavese who know how to speak the language of the younger generation: from food creator Aurora Cavallo (Cooker Girl) to Diabolik illustrator Giulio Giordano, and from Michelin-starred chef Pasquale Laera to artificial intelligence and visual culture expert Silvio Giordano. It is an opportunity to introduce young people from Piedmont and all over Italy to the themes of the land, the landscape, and environmental respect in an engaging and contemporary way.
The third edition of the Youth Biodiversity Festival, titled "Seeds for the Future," was spread over four days across the House of Biodiversity, Piazza Ippolito, and the Castle of San Giorgio Canavese. The artistic direction of Giuseppe "Peppone" Calabrese was confirmed, along with the collaboration with To Locals ETS, the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo, Coldiretti Torino, and the Slow Food Canavese Convivium.
