The nocturnal transfer of the silver statue from the Cathedral to the Sanctuary in Andria

The Night Procession of the Madonna dei Miracoli is one of the most authentic and deeply felt expressions of popular religiosity in Andria, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia. Every year, on the last Saturday of August, the heavy silver statue of the Virgin, the city's co-patron, is carried on shoulders from the Cathedral to the Basilica-Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, located on the northern outskirts of the town. The departure is set for around 3:00 AM: an unusual time that gives this event a unique atmosphere, defined by quiet reflection, hushed hymns, and thousands of people walking together in the twilight.
This devotion dates back to March 10, 1576, when, according to tradition, a dream led to the rediscovery of the Basilian laura of Santa Margherita in Lama, an ancient cave site. Inside, a Byzantine icon depicting the Madonna and Child was found, with a lamp burning before it. The fact that the lamp was still lit and full of oil, despite having no fuel, was considered miraculous and reported to Bishop Luca Fieschi. Since then, the image has been venerated as Santa Maria dei Miracoli of Andria, and the current Sanctuary was built around the cave.
The procession winds through the historic center of Andria, passing through Piazza Duomo, Piazza La Corte, Via Vaglio, and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, before reaching the sanctuary square. Along the way, citizens decorate their balconies and light up their facades, turning the streets into a single corridor of light and prayer. Upon arrival, the diocesan Bishop concelebrates Holy Mass with the clergy and the Augustinian Fathers, the custodians of the Sanctuary. The event officially opens the patronal festivities, which continue throughout September with rosaries, celebrations, and community gatherings.
For the people of Andria, the Night Procession is not just a religious rite, but a powerful symbol of collective identity. The organization is managed by the Patronal Feast Committee in close coordination with the Diocese of Andria and the Municipality, which manages the necessary traffic adjustments. Visitors arriving in Andria during these days discover a city that keeps vigil together, where Marian tradition continues to intertwine with the daily life of one of Puglia's most devout communities.
The official calendar for the 2026 Night Procession of the Madonna dei Miracoli has not yet been released. Tradition sets the event on the last Saturday of August, at night, with the transfer of the silver statue from the Cathedral of Andria to the Basilica-Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli. As soon as the Patronal Feast Committee publishes the official dates and times, this page will be updated with the complete program.
