In the heart of summer, the town of Trani, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT), pays homage to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel with one of the most deeply rooted celebrations in this Apulian city. The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival intertwines religious devotion with the maritime soul of Trani, a city whose destiny has always been linked to its port and fishing. For days, the historic center and the port area come alive with liturgical rites, illuminations, and moments of great popular participation.
The festivities open with a solemn novena that guides the faithful toward July 16th, the day of the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Every evening, in the Church of the Carmine, the rosary is recited and Holy Mass is celebrated, featuring the traditional distribution of the scapular, a sign of belonging to the Carmelite devotion. The week of celebrations culminates on July 16th with the solemn procession presided over by the Archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie, which winds through the streets of the city center.
The heart of the festival is the Sea Festival, which takes place on the central Saturday of the celebrations. After the solemn mass, the venerated image of the Madonna is carried in a procession to the Lega Navale piers and embarked on a fishing trawler, escorted by the divers of the "Amici del Mare" group and a parade of boats. Under the supervision of the Port Authority and in collaboration with the Local Maritime Office of Trani, the sea procession reaches the outer harbor, where a laurel wreath is blessed and entrusted to the waves in suffrage for those lost at sea. Upon the boat's return to the Santa Lucia pier, a fireworks display greets the return of the sacred image.
The sea procession is not just a religious rite: it is a collective gesture with which the community of Trani renews its bond with the Adriatic and remembers those who lost their lives at sea. In a city in Puglia where fishing and navigation have marked history, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival and the Sea Festival remain an identity-defining event that brings together fishermen, families, confraternities, and visitors along the port quays.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the weeks leading up to the festival. It is expected, according to custom, to include the solemn novena in the Church of the Carmine, the Sea Festival with the procession of the sacred image embarked at the port, and the blessing of the laurel wreath in memory of those lost at sea, in addition to the liturgical celebrations of July 16th.
Trani is served by the railway station on the Adriatic line (Bologna-Lecce), just a few minutes' walk from the historic center and the port. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Trani exit) or the SS16 state road. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Foggia-Gino Lisa.
The celebrations are concentrated in the Church of the Carmine, in the port of Trani (Lega Navale piers, outer harbor, Santa Lucia pier), and in Piazza Tiepolo for the illuminations.
The sea procession is best viewed from the port quays and the seafront. Access to religious events and the Sea Festival is free.
