Solemn celebrations in honor of Maria SS. dello Sterpeto and San Ruggero
The Barletta Patronal Festival, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT), is one of the most deeply felt celebrations in all of northern Puglia. Every year, around the second Sunday of July, the city honors its two patron saints: Maria Santissima dello Sterpeto and San Ruggero, Bishop of Canne. For centuries, popular devotion has intertwined the sacred and the secular, liturgy and street festivities, creating days that mobilize the entire Barletta community.
These solemn festivities have their roots in 1732, when Barletta chose the Madonna dello Sterpeto as its heavenly protector, alongside the already established cult of San Ruggero. The venerated Icon of the Madonna is kept in the Sanctuary of the Sterpeto, just outside the city, while the silver bust of San Ruggero is preserved in the church dedicated to him. Every year, on the eve of the festival, both sacred symbols are transferred in a solemn procession to the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, the spiritual heart of the old town.
The religious program opens with the descent of the Icon and the triduum of preparation, with masses dedicated to families, youth, and peace. The climax arrives on the central weekend: the Solemn Pontifical Mass in honor of the Madonna, the long evening procession that traverses the city streets, and, immediately after, the highly anticipated fireworks display from the Molo di Levante, which lights up the sea and the port of Barletta. The following day is dedicated to San Ruggero, with a second Pontifical Mass and further moments of celebration.
Alongside the rites, the city transforms: musical illuminations create galleries of light along the Corso and the squares, the band animates the streets from the afternoon, while the main squares (particularly Piazza Aldo Moro) host concerts, street performers, and children's entertainment. It is the great summer event that unites local residents and those who return for the occasion, in an atmosphere that blends reflection and joy.
Experiencing the patronal festival is also an opportunity to discover Barletta, famous for the historic Disfida (Challenge) of 1503 and for its imposing Swabian-Angevin Castle, the Cathedral, the Colossus of Heraclius, and the promenade overlooking the Adriatic. During the festival days, the historic center is the ideal stage to combine devotion, tradition, and the discovery of one of the most fascinating towns on the Puglian coast.
The 2026 Barletta Patronal Festival will take place around the second Sunday of July, with the main days from July 11th to 13th. The calendar will follow the traditional structure: the transfer of the sacred symbols to the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, the triduum of preparation with masses dedicated to families, youth, and peace, the solemn Pontifical Masses in honor of the Madonna dello Sterpeto and San Ruggero, the evening procession through the city center, and the fireworks display from the Molo di Levante, accompanied by musical illuminations and concerts in the square.
The detailed program of concerts and civil events is usually published by the Patronal Festival Committee "Barletta Civitas Mariae" in the weeks preceding the festival. This page will be updated with the full calendar as soon as it becomes available.
The full program for the 2026 edition (times of celebrations, concerts in the square, and guest artists) will be published by the Patronal Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the festival. The traditional structure includes: triduum of preparation with thematic masses, Solemn Pontifical Mass in honor of the Madonna dello Sterpeto with evening procession, fireworks display from the Molo di Levante, Pontifical Mass in honor of San Ruggero, musical illuminations along the Corso, and entertainment in Piazza Aldo Moro.
The heart of the festival is the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the historic center of Barletta (BAT). The processions cross the main city streets; concerts and entertainment take place primarily in Piazza Aldo Moro and along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, while the fireworks display is visible from the Molo di Levante and the promenade.
The festivities are concentrated in the days around the second Sunday of July. The 2026 edition is scheduled from July 11th to 13th.
All religious appointments and square festivities are free and open to everyone.
Barletta is served by the railway station on the Adriatic line (Bologna-Lecce) and is reachable via the A14 motorway, exiting at Canosa di Puglia or Andria-Barletta. During the festival days, it is recommended to reach the center on foot due to traffic closures related to the processions and illuminations.
