The patronal feast of Margherita di Savoia, blending faith, salt pans, and the sea
The Patronal Feast of the Most Holy Savior is the most important celebration in Margherita di Savoia, a coastal town in the Barletta-Andria-Trani province, Apulia, famous for hosting the largest salt pans in Europe. Every year, between late July and early August, the entire community gathers around its main patron saint in a festival that combines religious, civic, and popular dimensions, attracting salt workers, emigrants returning for the summer, and visitors alike.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the veneration of the Sacred Icon of the Most Holy Savior, kept in the Mother Church. The liturgical program opens with the novena, announced by firecrackers, and culminates on August 6th, the solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord, with a solemn Pontifical Mass and a grand procession through the city streets, accompanied by the traditional handing over of the city keys.
One of the most evocative moments is linked to the sea and the work in the salt pans: the boarding of the Sacred Icon onto a fishing boat at the canal port and the blessing of the salt in honor of the salt workers—a ritual that tells the deep soul of Margherita di Savoia, a city that grew around the white gold of its salt basins. During the festival days, there are also evocative re-enactments along the Cristoforo Colombo seafront and artistic installations that bring the Mother Church and corners of the town center to life.
Alongside the devotion, the festival offers the most joyful side of Apulian tradition: folkloric illuminations lighting up Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the squares, the brass band, concerts in the square, the funfair, and the fireworks that close the evenings. Musical performances are held primarily in Piazza Generale Dalla Chiesa and Piazza Libertà , featuring names from the Italian pop music scene and entertainment evenings designed for all ages.
Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee together with the parish and with the support of the Municipality of Margherita di Savoia, the Feast of the Most Holy Savior is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the moment when the city rediscovers its identity, between the sacred and the profane, popular faith, and maritime life. For visitors, it is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Apulian coast, its salt pans, its beaches, and its traditions.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of the Most Holy Savior is held in Margherita di Savoia from Monday, August 3rd to Friday, August 7th, within the summer program curated by the Municipality and the Patronal Feast Committee. As per tradition, the religious heart of the festival is the solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord, on August 6th, with the Pontifical Mass and the solemn procession through the city streets.
For 2026, the Committee, chaired by Giuseppe Napoletano, has announced major musical events and a fireworks display on a marine platform, in addition to the usual folkloric illuminations and processions with the handing over of the city keys.
The detailed day-by-day program will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The complete day-by-day program, with times and further musical appointments, will be published by the Patronal Feast Committee in the weeks preceding the festival.
Religious celebrations are held in the Mother Church of the Most Holy Savior, while concerts and shows enliven Piazza Generale Dalla Chiesa, Piazza Libertà , Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and the Cristoforo Colombo seafront in the center of Margherita di Savoia (BT).
