The global charity run at the Monticolo Lakes for spinal cord injury research
The Wings for Life World Run is a one-of-a-kind sporting event: it is the largest charity run in the world, seeing thousands of people run simultaneously across dozens of countries every year. In Appiano sulla strada del vino (Eppan an der Weinstraße), in the province of Bolzano, the event takes place in the natural setting of the Monticolo Lakes, one of the most beloved spots in South Tyrol for outdoor activities.
The unique feature of this race is the absence of a fixed finish line. All participants start at the same time and run until they are caught by the virtual Catcher Car, managed via the official Wings for Life World Run app. The virtual car starts thirty minutes after the race begins, moving at 14 km/h and accelerating progressively until it reaches the last athlete still in the race. Everyone can run at their own pace: it is not speed that counts, but the distance covered.
The event in Appiano follows a loop circuit of approximately 3.6 km around the two Monticolo Lakes, with an elevation gain of about 50 meters, alternating between forest roads and short paved sections. Participants can complete multiple laps, immersed in a landscape of woods and water that makes the experience as refreshing as it is athletic. The meeting point and start are located at the parking lot in front of the Lido Monticolo, which is easy to reach.
The event's message is clear: we run "for those who can't." 100% of entry fees and donations are donated directly to spinal cord injury research, supported by the Wings for Life foundation. This makes the Appiano run not just a moment of sport and community, but a tangible gesture of solidarity involving the entire municipality of Appiano and the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
The "App Run" format allows anyone to participate easily: simply download the official app, register, and show up at the meeting point. Experienced runners, amateurs, families, and wheelchair users all share the same starting line in a festive and inclusive atmosphere that has become the hallmark of the Wings for Life World Run.
On Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM, the Monticolo Lakes hosted the Appiano stage of the Wings for Life World Run. The start was set at the parking lot in front of the Lido Monticolo, following the usual 3.6 km loop circuit around the two lakes.
As per tradition, the virtual Catcher Car started thirty minutes after the race began, pushing runners to give their best at their own pace. The 2026 edition, run simultaneously worldwide, confirmed the event's massive success, raising approximately 9.2 million euros globally, all dedicated to spinal cord injury research.
