The Mendel Pass road closed to cars and reserved for cyclists
The Autofreier Radtag auf die Mendel (Car-free Cycling Day on the Mendel Pass) is one of the most beloved soft mobility initiatives in South Tyrol. For one day, the winding Mendel Pass road is closed to all motor vehicles and made exclusively available to cyclists, mountain bikers, and hikers. The climb winds through the vineyards of the Überetsch-Unterland region, offering spectacular views of Lake Kaltern and the Dolomites.
The pass road remains closed to motorized traffic from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, in the stretch between Oberplanitzing (Kaltern) and the summit, located at an altitude of 1,362 meters. Cyclists can tackle the ascent in total safety and freedom, enjoying the silence and the panorama without the noise of cars. Refreshment points with water and drinks are set up along the route, particularly at Matschatsch and near the summit.
The event is part of the European Mobility Week calendar and is organized by environmental groups from Kaltern and Eppan together with the Dachverband für Natur- und Umweltschutz Südtirol (Federation for Nature and Environmental Protection in South Tyrol) and the municipalities belonging to the Climate Alliance. The event aims to be a concrete signal in favor of soft mobility and the reduction of car traffic on Alpine roads.
Now in its nineteenth edition, the Mendel Pass Cycling Day attracts thousands of participants every year, confirming itself as a fixed appointment for two-wheel enthusiasts in Trentino-South Tyrol and for those who want to experience the mountains at a slow pace.
On Saturday, September 19, 2026, as part of the European Mobility Week, the Mendel Pass road will once again be reserved for cyclists. From 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, the stretch between Oberplanitzing (Kaltern) and the 1,362-meter summit will be closed to motor vehicles.
