The flavors of the Majella with wild boar, venison, and tradition this August
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Abruzzo summer, the small village of Pennapiedimonte, in the province of Chieti, hosts one of its most anticipated events: the Wild Boar Festival. Perched on the eastern slopes of the Majella massif within the National Park, the village opens its streets and squares to the many visitors who travel here throughout August to savor the local game cuisine.
The festival, organized by the Wild Boar Festival Committee with the support of the Municipality of Pennapiedimonte, was established in the 1990s and has become one of the longest-running summer gastronomic events in inland Abruzzo. The star of the show is wild boar, prepared according to traditional local recipes: stewed and sweet-and-sour wild boar, accompanied by venison, cured meats, meatballs, pappardelle, and sagne e ceci (pasta with chickpeas). Tastings begin every evening at 7:00 PM at the stands set up in the village's historic center.
Beyond the food and wine, the Wild Boar Festival offers nightly entertainment with live music and dancing in the square, creating a festive village atmosphere that engages both residents and tourists. The event is also accompanied by a market of local products and handicrafts, where you can find regional specialties and Abruzzese artisanal goods.
Visiting the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages in the province of Chieti. Pennapiedimonte, with its stone houses clinging to the rock and views over the Avello Valley, is an ideal starting point for hikes in the Majella National Park. The event thus combines mountain gastronomy, popular Abruzzese tradition, and the promotion of a territory of great natural beauty.
The Wild Boar Festival returns every summer in August. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: we recommend checking the organizing committee's social media channels for the updated calendar and evening program.
