The stone village of the Maiella lights up with Christmas magic
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets bring the historic center of one of Abruzzo's most fascinating villages to life every December. Nestled in the white rock of the eastern Maiella in the province of Chieti, and known as the "village of stonemasons"—or sometimes the "Matera of Abruzzo"—Pennapiedimonte is a labyrinth of local stone houses built in tiers, some carved directly into the living rock: a natural stage that dons its most enchanting atmosphere during the holidays.
The event's unique feature is its wandering nature: the Christmas trail winds through narrow alleys, arches, and historic buildings, turning the entire village into one large open-air market. The streets fill with stalls brimming with handcrafted creations and gift ideas, while live music and roaming performers accompany visitors on their walk.
The program highlights the excellence of the Maiella territory and the town of Pennapiedimonte. Among the most popular offerings:
The setting is the Majella National Park, at an altitude of approximately 669 meters. Strolling through the pedestrian-only lanes, you will encounter the Roman Tower, the Church of Saints Silvestro and Rocco, and the medieval Monumental Fountain. The Christmas season in Pennapiedimonte intertwines with other local traditions, such as the Living Nativity organized by the parish of SS. Silvestro and Rocco together with the Pro Loco. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic Christmas atmosphere of a small Abruzzo town, far from the crowds and immersed in the nature of the Maiella massif.
The 2026 edition of the Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets is expected in December, in line with the tradition of previous years. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been published. As usual, the historic center of the Maiella village, in the province of Chieti, is expected to host the wandering market through alleys and arches, with stalls of crafts, typical Abruzzese products, music, and entertainment. We recommend checking for updates with the Municipality of Pennapiedimonte and local tourism boards.
Pennapiedimonte is located in the province of Chieti, within the Majella National Park. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (exit at Casoli-Sant'Eusanio or Torre de' Passeri), continuing along provincial roads toward the village. The most convenient train stations are in Chieti or Pescara, from which you can continue by car.
Admission to the market is generally free.
The historic center is pedestrian-only and features many inclines: we recommend wearing comfortable shoes and warm clothing, as it is a mountain village in the middle of winter.
