About Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets

Every December, the historic center of Pennapiedimonte—one of the most charming villages in the province of Chieti—transforms into a wandering Christmas market that winds through alleys, stone arches, and buildings carved directly into the Maiella rock. Artisan stalls, gift ideas, food stands featuring local specialties, live music, street performers, creative workshops, and guided tours invite visitors on a festive stroll through the heart of the "village of stonemasons."

Christmas in the village carved from stone

The Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets bring the historic center of one of Abruzzo's most fascinating villages to life every December. Nestled in the white rock of the eastern Maiella in the province of Chieti, and known as the "village of stonemasons"—or sometimes the "Matera of Abruzzo"—Pennapiedimonte is a labyrinth of local stone houses built in tiers, some carved directly into the living rock: a natural stage that dons its most enchanting atmosphere during the holidays.

A wandering market through alleys and arches

The event's unique feature is its wandering nature: the Christmas trail winds through narrow alleys, arches, and historic buildings, turning the entire village into one large open-air market. The streets fill with stalls brimming with handcrafted creations and gift ideas, while live music and roaming performers accompany visitors on their walk.

Crafts, gastronomy, and tradition

The program highlights the excellence of the Maiella territory and the town of Pennapiedimonte. Among the most popular offerings:

  • Food stands featuring traditional local Abruzzese products;
  • Artisan stalls and Christmas gift ideas;
  • Mini-courses and creative workshops led by local village artisans;
  • Live music and street performances throughout the town center;
  • Guided tours to discover the history and beauty of the historic center, a national monument since 1970.

A village to discover all year round

The setting is the Majella National Park, at an altitude of approximately 669 meters. Strolling through the pedestrian-only lanes, you will encounter the Roman Tower, the Church of Saints Silvestro and Rocco, and the medieval Monumental Fountain. The Christmas season in Pennapiedimonte intertwines with other local traditions, such as the Living Nativity organized by the parish of SS. Silvestro and Rocco together with the Pro Loco. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic Christmas atmosphere of a small Abruzzo town, far from the crowds and immersed in the nature of the Maiella massif.

Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets — edition 2026

The return of the Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets is expected, as per tradition, in December 2026 in the historic center of the stone village of the Maiella. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: the usual wandering market through the village alleys is expected, featuring artisan stalls, local products, live music, and guided tours.

The 2026 edition of the Pennapiedimonte Christmas Markets is expected in December, in line with the tradition of previous years. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been published. As usual, the historic center of the Maiella village, in the province of Chieti, is expected to host the wandering market through alleys and arches, with stalls of crafts, typical Abruzzese products, music, and entertainment. We recommend checking for updates with the Municipality of Pennapiedimonte and local tourism boards.
