Irpinia's wild shoots served in Villamaina
Between late April and early June, the slender, slightly bitter shoots of wild asparagus emerge in the woods and along the hedgerows surrounding Villamaina, a small town in the province of Avellino, in Campania. Foraging for them has always been a spring ritual for Irpinian families: walking slowly along dry-stone walls and field edges, eyes trained to spot the green thread amidst the brambles. From this rural tradition, the Wild Asparagus Festival was born, an event that transforms Piazza Risorgimento into a grand village banquet every June.
The festival takes place in the heart of the village, in Piazza Risorgimento, following the classic Irpinian festival format: you collect your plate from the food stalls, sit at open-air tables, and stay late to enjoy folk music. The evening opening, around 7:00 PM, is the most popular, when the square fills with residents and visitors from neighboring towns. In the most recent edition, the event extended into the following morning, with stalls opening as early as 11:00 AM.
Local sources highlight a series of Irpinian wild asparagus-based recipes: the culinary offering revolves entirely around these spontaneous shoots, without fixed menus announced in advance. In traditional Alta Irpinia home cooking, wild asparagus is typically used in several recurring dishes:
This is not elaborate haute cuisine, but rather simple, seasonal fare: it is precisely this authenticity that makes the festival a favorite for those seeking the interior of Campania, far from the beaten paths of the coast.
Alongside the food, there is always live music, usually provided by local groups rooted in the folk traditions of Southern Italy. Past editions have featured bands like La Nuova Cantica i Bottari and i Piccimondo in 2023, and Musica Solare in 2024: tarantellas, tammurriatas, and traditional peasant songs that accompany the evening and draw the square into the dance.
The Wild Asparagus Festival is one of the most recent additions to the Irpinian calendar: the second edition took place in June 2023, the third on June 1, 2024, and the fourth on June 1-2, 2026. The organization is managed by the Municipality of Villamaina in collaboration with the APS Domenico Caracciolo association and the Youth Forum, with strong involvement from the local youthโa significant achievement for a town with just over nine hundred inhabitants.
Villamaina sits at an altitude of about 560 meters, between Gesualdo, Frigento, and Rocca San Felice, in a hilly area primarily dedicated to olive cultivation: this is the home of the Irpinia - Colline dell'Ufita extra virgin olive oil. The town is also known for the San Teodoro Thermal Baths, ancient sulfur springs recognized since antiquity for the therapeutic properties of their waters. Visitors arriving for the festival can combine their culinary experience with a walk through the Ufita hills and a visit to nearby villages, from Gesualdo, with its castle linked to the madrigalist prince Carlo Gesualdo, to the Valle d'Ansanto in Rocca San Felice.
The event always falls in the very first days of June, when wild asparagus is still available and the evenings in the hills are already mild. In 2026, the festival took advantage of the June 2nd Republic Day long weekend, expanding over two days. It is advisable to arrive early to find parking near the center and to beat the queues at the stalls during the evening opening.
For the 2026 edition, the Wild Asparagus Festival chose the June 2nd long weekend, expanding for the first time over two consecutive days. Piazza Risorgimento, in the center of Villamaina, hosted the food stalls and the live music stage.
Opening took place on Monday, June 1st at 7:00 PM, with the evening format that has always characterized the event, while on Tuesday, June 2nd, Republic Day, the stalls opened as early as 11:00 AM, allowing visitors to spend the entire holiday in the village.
In this edition too, the menu revolved around a series of Irpinian recipes based on wild asparagus, the spontaneous shoot that grows in the woods and along the fields of Alta Irpinia. The organizers did not release a detailed menu in advance: the choice of dishes remains linked to the availability of the harvest and local home cooking.
As per tradition, the festival combined food with entertainment, with live folk music that enlivened the square until late in the evening. The event was promoted by the Municipality of Villamaina together with local associations and covered by the local Irpinian press.
The organizers did not release a detailed schedule or the names of the musical groups performing at the 2026 edition.
Piazza Risorgimento, in the center of Villamaina (AV), 83050, Campania. Reference Municipality: Via Roma 77.
By car: Take the Grottaminarda exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then follow provincial roads towards Gesualdo and Villamaina; the village is about 45 km from Avellino. By train: The nearest useful station is Avellino, from where you can continue by bus or rental car. By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport, about an hour and a half drive away.
Stalls open in the evening, approximately from 7:00 PM; on the public holiday of June 2, 2026, opening was moved forward to 11:00 AM. Access to the square is free: you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, following the usual village festival format.
The historic center is small and partially uphill: it is best to leave your car on the outskirts of the village and continue on foot. At 560 meters above sea level, early June evenings can be cool, so a light jacket is useful. For accommodation, you can look for farmhouses (agriturismi) and B&Bs in Alta Irpinia, between Gesualdo, Frigento, and Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi.
