Black Truffle market exhibition and Chestnut festival in the heart of Alta Irpinia
At the foot of the Laceno plateau, the town of Bagnoli Irpino (Province of Avellino, Campania) hosts one of the most popular food and wine events in Southern Italy every autumn. Il Nero di Bagnoli — the name by which everyone knows the Black Truffle Market Exhibition of Bagnoli Irpino and the Chestnut Festival — takes over the entire historic center of the village for two weekends, turning alleys, squares, and open spaces into one large culinary trail.
The absolute star is the Bagnoli Black Truffle (Tuber mesentericum), which grows in the beech and turkey oak woods of the Picentini Mountains. It is a truffle with an intense and unmistakable aroma, distinct from the better-known black truffles of Central Italy, and for decades it has represented the gastronomic identity of this corner of Irpinia. During the event, truffles are displayed, sold, and, above all, cooked: tagliolini, eggs, crostini, meats, and cheeses are all prepared with a truffle slicer.
Alongside the truffle is the other gold of the Irpinian forest, the chestnut, roasted in the Pro Loco braziers or transformed into desserts. The table is completed with porcini mushrooms, walnuts and hazelnuts, caciocavallo and pecorino cheese from Bagnoli, ricotta and sheep's milk mozzarella, Irpinian cured meats, handmade stuffed ravioli, grilled meat, and spit-roasted veal, as well as traditional local dishes like migliatiello and minestra maritata.
For the 2025 edition, the Pro Loco set up 118 stalls featuring gastronomy and crafts, spread along about three kilometers of streets and squares: Piazza al Castello, the Mother Church area, Largo San Rocco, via De Rogatis, and Largo San Domenico. Every courtyard and cellar in the village participates in the festival: this is what distinguishes Il Nero di Bagnoli from any ordinary festival and explains why the town fills with visitors from all over Campania and beyond.
The program goes beyond the table. During the event, there is a succession of folk music, traditional dances and songs, street performances, craft markets, and demonstrations of truffle hunting with dogs. The town's monuments remain open to the public: the Cavaniglia Castle of Norman origin, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its famous wooden choir, the Convent of San Domenico, and the Church of Santa Margherita. There are also guided excursions and walks in the woods and on the Laceno plateau, just a few kilometers from the town center.
Organized by the Pro Loco Bagnoli Irpino-Laceno with the patronage of the Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino, the festival was born in the early eighties and has grown to become a regional and national attraction, capable of bringing tens of thousands of people to the town in just six days. In 2025, the 46th edition was celebrated; in 2026, it reaches its 47th.
The event traditionally falls on the last weekends of October, with a possible extension to the All Saints' Day bridge. For 2026, the Pro Loco has confirmed the dates of October 23-25 and October 30-November 1. Admission to the event is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls.
With the announcement by the Pro Loco Bagnoli Irpino-Laceno, the dates for Il Nero di Bagnoli are back: two consecutive weekends, from October 23 to 25 and from October 30 to November 1, 2026. It is one of the most important and popular food and wine events in Campania, capable of attracting thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond every year.
The star, as always, is the Bagnoli Black Truffle, accompanied by chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, cheeses, cured meats, and traditional Irpinian desserts. The event unfolds along the streets and squares of the historic center, which for six days become one large open-air kitchen, featuring a market exhibition, food stalls, and craft booths.
Beyond the food, the festival is an opportunity to discover the heritage of Bagnoli Irpino — the Cavaniglia Castle, the wooden choir of the Mother Church, the Convent of San Domenico — and the landscape of the Laceno plateau, just minutes from the village.
The dates for the 47th edition have been confirmed by the Pro Loco Bagnoli Irpino-Laceno: Friday 23, Saturday 24, and Sunday 25 October 2026, then Friday 30, Saturday 31 October, and Sunday 1 November 2026.
The detailed program — stall map, performances, music, workshops, and guided tours — has not yet been published: the Pro Loco usually releases it in the weeks immediately preceding the event, along with the official poster and downloadable map. Based on past editions, the black truffle market exhibition, food and craft stalls along the historic center, chestnut roasting braziers managed by the Pro Loco, folk music with traditional dances and songs, and public access to the village's monuments are expected.
For updates, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Pro Loco Bagnoli Irpino-Laceno and the event's Instagram profile.
Bagnoli Irpino can be reached by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, taking the Avellino Est or Lioni-Grottaminarda exit and continuing along the Ofantina road towards Montella. The reference railway station is Avellino, which is then connected by local bus lines. The nearest airports are Naples Capodichino and Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
During the event, the historic center is closed to traffic. In the 2025 edition, parking was set up at the Vittorio Gatti Sports Field and in the PIP areas of Bagnoli Irpino and Montella, with a shuttle service to the Piazza Matteotti hub.
Free admission. In recent editions, stalls have opened on Fridays from 6:00 PM and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM, continuing until late at night.
Wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing: the town is located in the mountains, and late October evenings are cold. It is best to carry cash for the stalls. Those who want to avoid the crowds find the best time to visit is Saturday morning.
