The Salento meatball festival at Piazzale Montegrappa in Tuglie
The Sagra te la Purpetta is one of the most anticipated evenings of the summer in Tuglie, a small town in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. The name, in the local dialect, celebrates the purpetta, or meatball: the absolute star of the festival, prepared following traditional home recipes passed down through generations. It is a simple, popular dish that tells the story of the humble, generous cuisine of rural Puglia, made with authentic ingredients and slow, careful preparation.
The festival takes place at Piazzale Montegrappa, on the hill of the same name overlooking the town, part of the Murgia Salentina ridge. It is a cool, shaded spot, perfect for summer evenings: for years, the Pro Loco of Tuglie has welcomed tourists and locals returning for their holidays, offering them the most authentic flavors of local tradition. Amidst the trees and evening lights, the square transforms into a large, convivial space for eating, chatting, and dancing.
Alongside the purpette, the stalls offer typical dishes of Tuglie and Salento cuisine, accompanied by local wines. Musical entertainment is an essential component of the evening: the festival features live music and folk dancing, capturing that dancing under the stars atmosphere that makes Puglian village festivals so special. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Salento, far from the crowded coastal destinations.
The Sagra te la Purpetta is not an isolated event, but part of the series of summer events that the Pro Loco organizes every year at Piazzale Montegrappa, alongside other gatherings like the Sagra Benvenuta Estate and the Festa della Conoscenza. A calendar of free popular festivals that, between late July and early August, brings the evenings of Tuglie to life and attracts visitors from across the Province of Lecce.
The Sagra te la Purpetta 2026 will be held on July 30, 2026, at Piazzale Montegrappa in Tuglie, confirming the summer appointment organized by the Pro Loco. Once again this year, the evening revolves around purpette prepared according to the traditional recipe, other typical Salento dishes, and musical entertainment on the Murgia Salentina hill.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (full menu and musical guests) will be announced by Pro Loco Tuglie in the weeks leading up to the event, usually on their official Facebook page.
The established structure of the evening includes:
